I am looking at how I am going to package everything in the engine compartment on my build, battery, ECU, coolant lines etc. In doing so I did the common Miata coolant reroute to improve the engine cooling. The way I have done it the coils need to move. I was wanting to move them over to the firewall anyways to clean up the engine itself. I assumed longer aftermarket wires would be easy to find, but that isn't so. Does anyone know of a source for longer than factory plug wires for the Miata? I have no problem with the universal kind as long as they are good quality and come with the right ends. The closest I can find is a "Sport Compact" kit from Taylor. I haven't picked the exact location yet, but each of the wires will need to be ~12 longer for me to have room to play with the location.

Buy the connectors and wire separately and assemble your own. The wire is available in reels.

And in all my years of working cars I've never made a universal set that worked for very long. Soon there was the dreaded intermittent miss.

Getting the cable is easy as there are many distributors, but where would I get the ends that match the Miata ones?

I've used Magnecor for custom lengths assembled with late model coil ends in their Electrosports 80 line. Arrived within days of order placement and have worked great.

I had actually just found the info on the magneto website for custom length cables. The kv85 can be made to custom length at no additional cost according to the spec sheet. They are almost twice that of the standard ngk wires.

I just bought a set of wires for a V-8, and used the longer wires, cheaper then a custom set. Dave W

and they had the right ends for the Miata engine? Do you remember what engine they were for?

Turns out Mazda Protégé wires are about 4-6" longer than Miata wires which is all I need to move my coils.

Ir you could go the other way and have shorter plug wires. The later Miata engines used a CCP setup with the coils on top of the valve cover and very short plug wires. You can see this in the picture

Graham

Edited to swap to a better picture.

I have seen the COPS setup Miata guys have retrofitted. A lot of them use a Toyota COPS system. I didn't want to have to mess with retrofitting anything and some of it can be a lot of work. I also wanted a clean / simple valve cover and the COPS clutters up the top of the valve cover. If I ever go turbo, I may think about it harder. Thanks for the thought though.
