Hey, looking to use Jack's control arms, trying to get details on the Miata / Pinto balljoint

Are both 7 degrees? Or maybe the problem is diameter/insertion depth? Having trouble finding details on that

thanks team

miata:

standard 1.5 inch / 12 inch taper for a ball joint or 8 to 1.

7.125 degrees

pinto:

Degree of Taper: 7 degree

I bought a balljoint to test and they seem to fit OK.

stud on the miata BJ is longer, but doesn't bottom out on the knuckle. Just the cross hole is a little higher than the castle nut when tightened down.

will be some time before I can confirm 100% that range of motion is OK

Maybe a hardened washer under the nut would do the trick?

yep can space the nut up, was only thinking if the bj stud was far up into the spindle, range of motion may be limited? Then again, not building a rock crawler here. should be fine. And hopefully will have some suspension mocked up soon

I'd say that as long as the tapered part of the stud isn't pulled completely into the spindle (that is, if there's some taper visible on top when the stud is fully tightened) AND there's sufficient length that the ball is still free when the arm is at full travel (both up and down) that it'll work as well as it does in a Miata spindle. But those are two big "ifs" and need checking carefully.
