That second picture is a good, workable solution. Run the square tubing across the entire frame, as you show it, and weld it to everything it crosses. It can go below the upper frame rails or above them, if you need the height. The "flaps" on the ends that the shock actually bolts to need to be long enough to make an "L" around the upper frame rails, and can be boxed in over the end of the square tube.
I did something similar in my build, only I used ready made shock mount brackets (So I didn't have to rely on Bubba's bracket-building!), boxed in the inside ends with flat stock and ran a piece of round tubing (hey, it was lying around, paid for...) between the two mounts. It looks like this:

Crappy cell-phone picture, but if you squint, you can see the piece of flat on the far end as it extends down to the base of the upper frame rail and is welded throughout.
