I am having trouble downloading the McDermott program using the link that chetcpo posted. Is there a direct link to the program?

That is a direct link. Just click "save to disc." It's a MS DOS program.

I saved the program to disc, but it won't open when I type the address on the second line (C:\PROGRA~1\WISHBONE)

You have to type in the location to where you saved it.

OK, it's been a while since I played with it and I didn't have it on my computer so I DL it myself. The actual program you download is an installation program. You can run it in windows and it will install the program. You can then run it by selecting it from your programs list on your start menu bar thingy.

When it opens it opens up in a little pop up dos window and has instructions on how to proceed from there.

I finally got the program to run - it's pretty neat. With my set up, I'm getting 1.5" of RC lateral movement for 3 degrees roll, and 2.4" for 5 degrees. I think that's OK. With 1" bump I'm getting -2.4 degrees toe-in, and with 2" bump it's -4.7 degrees. Is that too much bump steer?

That's quite a bit, what happens when you raise your rack a bit?

Uh, yeah. I have 0.007" over 2" of bump and 0.020" over 2" of droop. And my numbers are kinda lousy because I am not shortening the Miata rack for my +4. I'd say the very most you could deal with would be 0.1" at 2" droop, and half of that at 2" bump. Even then it's probably going to be palpable.

I moved the rack down 2.6". Now I have -0.7 degree with 2" bump and 0.8 degree with 2" droop. The tie rod barely clears the lower control arm.

It's very low, like it need to be with Miata spindles.

It sounds like you're going about this all wrong... buy Keith's book at the least, but I recommend Smith's Prepare to Win, Tune to Win, and Engineer to Win as well. This should all be sorted out mathematically. There are too many factors in a suspension to get it right by trial and error!

The way Mazda does it (and I do also on my own Miata-based cars) is put the front pickup point for the lower control arm behind the steering rack, and make the rack the same width as the pickup points, and the tie rods at right angles to the direction of travel (that is, the tie rods are parallel to each other when viewed from above). Zero bump steer when going straight, minimal bump steer when bumping and turning.
