I have a Cavalier rack for mine. The plan is to run links to idler arms on each side.

It would have been simpler and lighter to cut a standard rack down, but I wanted to be able to change Ackermann and other geometry, just to see what the car will really do best with.

If you're not planning on something like that, it's not a good idea at all. You trade a rack and maybe some machining for a rack, two inner tierods, two outer tierods, two idler arms, six tierod ends (I'm using old-school VW bits, they're small, light, and inexpensive) and the two inner tierod-to-rack bushings.

I am not sure if we are on the same page. This is what I am talking about:
http://www.mooreparts.com/latest-rage-4 ... une-buggy/
Commonly used in off road buggies with enormous suspension travel with 20" or more not unusual. Very long ties rods. Reason is that I am looking for very narrow chassis up front (mid engine).

That type of rack is commonly used on buggies to emulate the the geometric relationship of the stock steering box to the trailing arm suspension of the Beetle. With the SLA suspension used on most Locosts, the rack is usually long enough to roughly match the distance between the inner pivots of the lower control arms. You could make this work by bolting a plate to the steering linkage attachment points, and then drilling the plate to match the width that you want. Sounds a little "Rube Goldberg", but if the price was right on the "Buggy Box", it might be worth the bother. Just my $.02 worth!
