Wanted to take apart the Tacoma IRS front axle assembly.
Some bolts are normal with six flats but others are some sort of odd external torque drive.
Need to know what they are properly called so that I can buy the right socket.

Could it be a female torx head bolt? Is it a male bolt head or female bolt head?

Tom

Inverted torx

I had one for old Honda head bolts, but when I did the head on the Mini I needed 3 other sizes.

Harbor Freight had an impact set that I was unable to break on the Mini.

Socket goes oven not in, so I would say the bolt head is male.

Inverted Torx sounds right.
Cheap parts stores do not carry them, off to NAPA.

They are often listed as E-Torx, which I assume is external torx.

$16.50 got a small set.
Of course I only needed one. :BH:
Got it apart.
Looks like I should have bought a non-ADD unit for the BEC project.

When you get a chance please post a picture of the bolt head so we can all visualize it.

Sometimes, in a pinch, a 12 point socket can be used to coax those buggers off.

Some people never have anything except ideas. Go do it.
Emissions & fuel economy haven't exactly been areas of strength for past rotary power plants, but absolutely no one with a soul has ever cared.

Inverted Torx are becoming pretty common. Lighter weight (aka cheaper), and often used on high-torque bolts.
As much as I grumble about them when I need another sized socket, they do work fairly well.
Cheers.
