Another option is to use a standard vw irs transaxle with rabbit or similar uprights. Adapt to a small, water cooled, narrow, inline 3 or 4. Put the footwells on each side, behind the wheels. Either tandem seating with the driver straddling the engine cover with a narrow body and separate fenders or side by side with full, slab sided body work to a boat tail. Radiator over the transaxle shifter turret with a good bumper to protect the turret and a decent cg.
By far a better and easier to obtain choice of trans/engine MV8 , I know the vw crown wheel flips so that would be straight forward. I found this page of info on BSA , I never realised quite how many types a car they made, had to smile at the price`s
