Steve sold the La Bala to some other guy, who doesn't seem to be doing anything with it.

Yup, precisely that; and that's exactly what GTM did with it (you'll see from the photos that the wishbones aren't mounted straightforward parallel to each other). It works brilliantly on the road - I drove the GTM in a back-to-back test against the S1 Lotus Elise for one of the UK magazines,a number of years ago and it compared very favourably indeed for a car from such a small company, developed on such a minimal budget.

The Renault Sport Spider has a reputation as a very well-handling car, too, but it was a commercial failure because the Elise came out at the same time and was significantly lighter and quicker.

Yep, not far off, but as Jack spotted, it's a bit more sophisticated and cleverer in terms of what it can do than a plain vanilla trailing arm setup: the Beetle is the 90 degree equivalent of a parallel, equal length double wishbone arrangement, whereas the GTM/Renault Spider arrangements are the 90 degree equivalents of converging, unequal length double wishbones, if that makes sense?
