I've been sent some pictures of a car being built locally (Brisbane, Australia) which is mid-engined with a Mitsubishi VR4 drivetrain. The builder has had a "transfer box" made to drop the rear tailshaft output down, under the engine, and forward to the rear diff now mounted at the front! The chassis started out as a UK Sylva of some sort but has been extensively modified. They're not my photos so I don't have permission to put them up here. I'm hoping to get a look at the car myself in the next week or so - I'll grab some detail pics then.

Ok, I have one for you guys... I recently read through a post on here about a diesel/hydrostatic(?) drive trike. Would it be possible to run the rear wheels in the traditional manner with hydro-drive up front? Or 4 wheel hydro-drive? Feel free to blow this apart with theory...

How about Skyline GTR's drive train?

It must be front engined ? as there is certainly not much room at the back.

Everytime energy goes through a conversion, some is lost. While the above will work, it'll lose some of the diesel's advantage (good mpg) due to it being lost in friction and heating in hydraulic system.

This would probably work for a slow off road application, like a farm tractor. But for freeway driving it would be very lossy. The pump would churn up the fluid which would get very hot. Flow losses and pressure drops through the pipework at high rpm would make it very inefficient at small throttle high road speeds. Fuel economy would be awful, and a hydraulic system large enough to do the job would be large, and expensive.

here is a link to a volvo powered AWD '32 Ford the front susp looks very locost like.. chassis is very locost like.... might give a few people some ideas. The Volvo powered car uses the Cosworth awd components, the quadradeuce uses an auto trans...

hi, my project, slow progress, but want say using: engine- opel 2.5 v6; gear box -ford mt75 4x4; front hubs- from 4x4 ford sierra; front diff- try add from rear and use ford escort drive shafts in front. because i use rear diff i can choose diff ratio. suspension setup similar to nissan skyline (front shock absorber from honda civic) body wider, dont like sit in small space p.s. sorry for bad english

I've posted this in 3 different threads now but the info is indeed relevant to all 3 ... I have mentioned a few times that one solution is to turn the V8 around, run a 4WD box forward and run a driveshaft back to a rear diff and forward to a front diff if you want 4WD, well here is one very successful lo(w)cost example ... Sure would, if your scared of the power losses give it more power. There was a very successful home built Busa powered AWD special in New Zealand that came 2nd outright behind Rod Millen in the Race To The Clouds one year and he had this setup but he wouldn't tell anyone the exact layout. I worked on a bit of Golf Course equipment at one time and most of the machines were totally hydrostatic driven implements and wheel motors, they did just fine with small 3 cyl Kubota 35 hp diesels so they can't have been losing too much power. A 100" Toro Fairway Mower has 5 large cylinder mowers and a ground speed up to 10 mph and doesn't bog down even in heavy wet grass on slopes...and it's 3000 lbs in weight too. So all this easily on 35hp (note 2 of the 5 mower heads are underneath the engine) ..
