Edit:

Skip to page 2... dropped the SBC in favor of a lighter 4-cyl from a BMW.

Quote:
Well, this project started innocently enough and has now taken on a life of its own. My first project (middy) has been slowly losing parts to my daily driver (clutch & trans) I helped a friend pull the 305 out of his Camaro and instead of leaving it under his deck I picked it up for the cost of my labor. It was hooked up to a slipping 700r4, but we gave that to another friend so that he can rebuild it and drop it into his El Camino with a 350. Enough about that... here's what's planned:

- +442E chassis w/1.25sq 16-ga
- Chevy 305 w/MPFI (Megasquirt)
- T5 WC 5-speed
- Ford 8.8 rear end
- Mustang front spindles

I'm hoping to get the chassis started and tacked over the Christmas break and have it rolling/running by July/August. The goal is to have it completely ready and road-legal by the time I'm done with school in 2-3 years time, so that I can take it cross-country and head down the Pacific coast from BC to SoCal. The small-block is a far cry from my normal lightweight performance philosophy, but I figured it was time to take the 'big hammer' approach to a vehicle. Inspired by the execution of Rod's 5.0 setup, this was a heck of a lot easier to build than start mating VW engines to a T5 with custom bellhousings (that may come eventually, but not now). I'm picking up the trans tomorrow morning, and another friend may be getting the 8.8 along with the 302 he was buying for his Capri 5.0. The past few days have been a bit of a whirlwind. I've had a few false-starts, I'm determined to to get this one done.

i think you'll find that despite the added weight, the 305 is a good choice with its shorter stroke.

From Wiki - 305
Production: 1976–2000
Displacement: 305 cu in (5 L)
Power: 130 hp (97 kW)-250 hp (186 kW)
Bore and Stroke: 3.736 × 3.48 in (94.9 × 88.4 mm)

A TRUE 305 uses the 350 crank and a very small bore block.

From my limited experience with SBC, what I've found is that the 305 is known to have a slightly longer stroke than other SBC and is therefore a torquier engine than, say the 350, but is less willing to rev.

Nope, same stroke as a 350.

As for the old school small block chevies (not LS motors), the 400 had a longer stroke and a bigger bore than the 350.

Ah, right... so it's the bore vs stroke ratio that is affected and alters the characteristics of the engine.

Anyways, I picked up the T5 this afternoon. Looks good from the outside, but requires a complete 2nd gear overhaul. No biggie, I already have most of the parts to fix it.

First pics of the engine... I now have it stripped down to block and rotating assemblies only. This thing needs to be sanitized ASAP. Yech I hate dirt/grease! :ack:

I'm currently making excellent progress on the CAD model as I'm using it to learn the 'weldment' features in Solidworks, which will help greatly when I get around to designing my FSAE chassis later this week. I'm making a couple of changes on the front suspension mounting tubes to simplify front suspension geometry and hopefully have loads feed directly into chassis nodes. The rear will undergo some mods as I will be trying to find a Ford IRS rear diff.

I'm still coming to terms with chassis weight as I'm used to Colin Chapman's 'add lightness' mantra... by using 1.25sq x .065" the lower chassis rails weigh almost 38lbs!!! My next chassis (with 4-cyl engine) will be closer to book-size and use more round tubing to really drop the weight, but that's for later.

More pics to come this weekend as I iron out some details with the engine and trans.

Does your motor have an aftermarket intake on it (edelbrock performer)? Have you run the casting numbers to confirm that it is a 305.

All numbers confirm that it is a 305, or at least various castings from various years due to replacement of the block at some point.

Popular Hotrodding and Chevy High Performance both had some interesting articles on high performance 305 builds. have you seen them?
Oh and BTW if it helps you any, SBCs are nice with turbos

Most of the progress today was fixing the sandblaster at school and then getting the engine down to a bare block for degreasing. A pic or two of the engine and trans taken along the way:

Woah! It's been almost 2 months since the last update... I guess I've been busier with Formula SAE than orginally planned. Not much progress as i've been battling with the daily driver as well as studying for finals (3 to go, over the next 5 days :ack: ) I'll be in the shop between Christmas and New Year's and maybe get some parts cleaned up and order the material.
