Just a list of engine weights, I found. While double checking my memory; looking for a light weight cheap V-8( I was right Buick 350 450lbs W/cast iron intake and a front distributor). There is a sort of legend at the bottom of the chart giving the source (the number in Parenthesis):

From:http://www.team.net/sol/tech/engine.html

Engine Weight FYI

It isn't really a Frequently Asked Question, so I'll call it an "FYI", For Your Information. This was originally a list I'd compiled long ago on paper, then moved to the computer, then posted on the net as a response to some questions. It wound up being popular, but since I didn't keep track of the origin of the data there was some debate as to how accurate the list was. This new improved list has origins where I could find references; what doesn't have an origin is stuff from my original list.

You'll sometimes see more than one weight listed. Some weights are for just a long block, some are complete and ready to run, and of course everything in between. Some engines varied in weight during their production runs - for example, some later Chevy V8s use thinwall blocks and aluminum heads.

If you have any figures you'd like to contribute, please send them to me at the email address above.

Posted by Greg55_99 on an Off road forum. Shamelessly ripped and reposted here. Thanks Greg! I would have just supplied a link and called it a day but this seemed like really good info. Too good to risk losing to the gods of the internet, not to mention I didn't want to step all over their bandwidth, so here they are.

The posts appear in reverse order because I wasn't smart enough to load them in reverse order. (Makes sense eh?)

I was VERY interested in the Saturn Engine too. My daily driver is a '96 Saturn with 263,000 miles on it. It's the DOHC engine, and makes great power and if you keep oil in it, it seems to be indestructible. Plus it's aluminum head and block = light weight. I seached High and Low for a bolt up solution to get power to the rear wheels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturn_Sky ???

Has anyone yet mentioned the Toyota Previa engines? 2.4 in N/A and supercharged form and unusual that they are 75 degree slant engines that would give a Locost a super low GC - maybe too wide though? Also in AWD.

For someone considering the use of the entire subframe, that appears to be much more performance handling oriented than the tbird irs, judging from the control arm design. What ratios are available? Production years? Diffs? What does the front suspension look like?

The all aluminum Saturn engine referred to above is the 124 hp 1.9 from the s cars before they started using mainstream gm components... the something or other ultralight started out using those engines with an early rx7 5 speed... then they switched to Honda power... and considering the similarities between the rx7 trans and Miata trans, there's no reason in my mind a Miata trans wouldn't work... to my knowledge, the 1.9 did not share the corporate bell housing patterns of other gm vehicles...

The Miata has an integrated bellhousing and the Rx7 has a removable one.

The cosworth vega would be cool if you could keep a computer in it or switch to mega squirt.

I guess mating up a Miata trans would be a bit difficult... Lol

Those cosworth Vegas seem to be a bit overpriced... There's not really much of a collector market for them... I found a couple locally on craigslist...

There is a collector for everything lol I would take a cosworth vega any day if the price was right. The computer is giant though much bigger than a large shoe box.

Wasn't the Vega GM's first attempt and teflon coated cylinder walls? And their first failure at it?
