Hey all, well I just had a look and darn it if it hasn't been five years that I've been on this forum, where does the time go? Actually it turns out that a lot of it went into buying tools and waiting for that "elusive bargain".
So this is actually my second kick at this, the first time I was trying to build a roadster but I was using a chop saw to do my cuts and then my table warped during the very slow build, needless to say I had a fabrication (fabricator
) failure. Even though I screwed it up I learned from it so it's not a real loss, not only that but I salvaged almost all of the steel.
My engine is a ford duratec 2.0 from an '07 Focus with 34,500km I picked it up from my local pick a part a couple years ago with the alt for $150 including core and tax. Yes I did a rather embarrassing happy dance. The induction for this took a bit of a tortured path as I had sworn off of building another frame (yep I was sulking in the corner of my garage thinking of engine swaps etc). Anyhow long story short after exploring a number of different options I decided that almost any normal car project would be mundane at best... The result, I have ITB's from a gsxr1000 adapted to a DCOE style manifold, a turbo manifold and a rebuilt Nissan/Garrett T3 turbo from an '84 300zx. I also have a Fidanza flywheel and some forged I-beam con rods, I need to buy some pistons still, I'm waiting for another of those elusive deals. All in all I'm aiming for a dead reliable no hassle 300ish hp.
The transmission is from a late model Ranger, the shifter position is not ideal but at $150 plus shipping it was much cheaper than any other option that I could find so I'll have to figure something out for the crappy shifter location. I spent so much time looking online and scouring e-bay for something better I think I've done some permanent damage to my optic nerves although the real damage is more than likely a just couple inches further back.
As for an axle and spindles I'm not committed to anything yet but I'm thinking SN95 Mustang in the back with Mustang II spindles in the front, it's been done parts are cheap and if it breaks down somewhere (not that I see myself going too far from home in it, lot's of rain in the GVRD) I should be able to get replacement parts almost anywhere.
This car is going to be a street toy with hill climbs and whatnot in mind, I don't plan on using too much in the way of exotic parts suspension wise but if it happens then it happens.
I expect to have a lot of questions as this go's on so thank you in advance to all that have comments and suggestions.
Now I just need to figure out how to post some images!
Ted
