My LOCOST daydreams have been put on hold while I restore a 61 Bugeye Sprite with my 14yr old son. Here are a few ideas that have popped up while we've worked on it:

1) I'm going to use the Sprite cockpit dimensions for my build. It fits like a glove, so why go smaller ?
2) I'm going to use a Sprite windshield and frame. An early type so I can pull it off easily for autocross and track days( I have access to several why waste time fabricating what you don't have to ?
3) I'm planning on a roll cage with a front hoop just behind the windshield and a traditional rear hoop, both going to the main bottom frame and tied together on top by a center bar. I'm thinking of adding some some side impact bars that would be hinged at the front for easy entry and exit, with a simple drop in pin for rear location, or maybe completely removeable.
It's only crazy if it doesn't work, right ? Jeff

There's not a thing wrong with your thinking. Build it with what you've got to fit your needs.

Personally, I would do the same...

.. However, I just came to a nasty realisation recently when pondering a build... I don't have any frigging receipts for this junk I've got lying around... which is not going to fly at registration time. So unfortunately it may be that you have to be careful not to use "too much" unless you have licenses of cars you declared as donors, and can say the parts were off those. Here in Ontario, it appears I need to be particularly careful to document where every part came from.

A particular shame about that is that some wreckers yards have "all you can carry" days. If you can stagger out of the gate with 200lb of parts 10 times for $50 a throw, you darn well should be able to find enough in your 2000lb parts pile to make a sub 1500lb locost.... However, while a wrecker would happily write you individual receipts for anything you got at normal prices I don't think they will be so accommodating on deals like that, over and over again. Best way to do that I guess is to buy a real dog of a donor, for very cheap, and say all the "nice" parts you picked came from it.

Anyway, I'm just bemoaning that I could potentially put together a safe and reliable (Maybe not top performing) locost for $1000, but I'd never get it "legalised" for road use here. The deally with the MTO seems to be, guilty until proven innocent.
