I've been looking around at gauges quite a bit lately. I always thought I'd go with a full compliment of VDO's, but now that it's decision time, I'm finding shortcomings that I'm not willing to live with (such as max 7k rpm tachometer readout - really?). Then, just recently I discovered Stack gauges. Made in the UK, they have different price points from full professional stepper motor gauges ($$$), to the more affordable electronic type, and even some full mechanical gauges. I love pretty much everything about them, but they are a bit pricey compared to VDO - but their price includes the sending unit, so it's not really that much more expensive.

Summit Racing and Jegs appear to stock their full lineup.

I bought a set of VDO Vision gauges. They do have an 8k rpm tachometer, but it's in the larger 4" diameter housing. Don't know if that's a dealbreaker or not.

I bought mine from eGauges.com.

Here's a photo and more details from my build thread post.

I kind of like these:

Speedway also stocks classic instrumentation gauges, not for my car, but they are pretty neat:

I just found this site, http://greatlakesskipper.com/category-1/56_68-boat-gauges-oil.html, I don't know much about the gauges or the vendor, but they are cheap and there are a lot of styles. Plus they're for boats, so they're probably a bit more weather resistant.

I bought these from a fellow member a couple of years age and I love them. Autometer Golden Oldies I think they're called. David

I'm having similar problems finding a good tach for my truck, except I'm looking for one with a 4000 or so limit. Merc flathead.

Every time I drive it and see 8000 rpm on a guage where I shift around 3000, drives me mad! :BH:

Hey, just think of it at eco-driving!

eGauges.com has a bunch of different gauge sets. The VDO Vision ones that I have also have an available 0-4000 rpm, 3 3/8" tach:
http://www.egauges.com/vdo_ind.asp?Type ... PN=333-163

It looks like there are a few other options are 4,000, but I'm not sure what kind of gauge face or size you're looking for, but eGauges might have what you're looking for.

Mach 68,

Try Speed Hut ....

http://www.speedhut.com/

They have 4 and 6K tachs with various different gauge faces.

I used the Autometer Platinum Series.
I like the look of the plain silver faces with the black lettering, kind of clean and tidy yet not too fussy.
Of course getting a deal didn't hurt either :D .
So far they have performed perfectly.

Al
