As I consider welding just as a means to an end (sticking 2 pieces of metal together duh), welding otherwise doesn't get my attention until you see something extraordinary like this ...

The welding is impressive, but so is that shop!

Excuse me while I go throw a sheet over my frame to hide my shame.

Seriously though, that is amazing!

Pales in comparison of course but just for those of you who have a pre-conception of Chinese welding ...

That looks like very nice work, Cheapracer. Sometimes I can get a very nice looking bead, but I can never be consistent at all angles around a tube, uphill, downhill etc.

Cheapracer,

A question: in the first of your two photos, what happens in the inside joints of that short diagonal tube. Do you leave that side of the joint unwelded, accept long stick-out with MIG, or go back to it with Flux-core or some other process (TIG?) that isn't as access-challenged as MIG?

It's a practical question anticipating some of my own problem areas.

I too would be proud to to as well as your Chinese welder ....

do you mean a chinees welder or a man from china that welds?

i used to do gas like that and tig but it takes sooo long to do the prep work, but i am as lazy as hell now and just burn it in with the mig, what you get is what you get.

It's all TIG'ed, unprepped other than basic descaling if required. Those diagonals are actually zinc coated as that's what was laying around* hence the white'ish colour. (*it's only a pre-production test run).

My own insides on diagonals I do with long stick out (MIG) without any problems although it helps if you're above the weld of course.

John;
He is a Chinese welder in China and even uses his own cheap/portable 220 volt TIG in preference to the factories 380 volt/3 phase TIG :-) He uses 1.6mm MIG wire for filler.
