I'm trying to wrap my head around the idea of making my own uprights but not sure how I would go about making the bearing cups. Do most of you just use some round tubing with approximate ID's to match the bearing OD and ream the round tubing to match the bearing to the tubing? If you do, what WT do you guys use?
Once that's figured out, where do you get the hubs? I guess my google searching skills are lacking but I can't seem to find a good place to research hubs, bearings, and spindles?

I'm leaning towards taking a knuckle assembly from a junkyard to use the spindle and hub, replacing the bearing with a new one, and using tubing for the bearing cup.
Right track?

The questions your asking are the reasons I tend to look to other approaches.

So that would be using modern sealed hub assemblies where all you need to do is bolt it on. Otherwise you can buy axle stubs for things like Pinto or VW and use the bearings, races and housings or rotors that are available for them.

It's still a lot of work. You need good drawings of the other components that are involved - rims, calipers, rotor and hat.

I'd like to see a front spindle that had moderate KPI, say 5-7 degrees, less offset to the wheel mounting surface from the steering axis (maybe 4") and a lower ball joint closer to the rim. Those are some guesses towards what would be nice...

Well I plan on having all the parts before making the upright but I know the direction I want to go just not sure how to properly get there. I COULD just do a tube and sheet/plate steel approach like many others have done but the bearing cups have me a little puzzled. and for those 'wants' regarding a good upright design that you listed, is the reason why I want to make my own uprights.

Ultimately, I'd like to have some uprights cnc'd out of billet since I have a friend that works at a cnc machine shop. I don't want to waste his time or mine if I can't even get the basic dimensions of the upright hammered out.
