Does anyone have a drawing or drawings for dimple dies? I can see from the various commercial ads for them that the profiles are fairly simple. However, some look a little too simple to my eyes, even though they are pretty expensive. I suspect there is some logic to the better ones in terms of the metal shaping profiles in them and how they progressively deform the metal. Anyone know of any design info for same?

Thanks,

Lonnie

I made my own set. I used a 35° (I think) angle, and both male and female are cut such that the metal is not pinched when fully pressed (ie: for 16ga metal, there is a uniform 16ga gap between the two).

Unless you are dimpling plate, ordinary steel is likely fine.

Got it. Thank you very much.

Yours look good. At the prices being charged for dimple dies in the commercial marketplace, you may want to consider making them. You could probably finance the Lethal Locost II from the proceeds.

Cheers,

And now in fanciful PDF format, for the CAD-challenged!

I have some big holes I want to put in the dash for Car9, probably something like 4". Do you think I could scale up one of these drawings and use the result? Would it need something like a big shop press to use it? I did look up prices but they start getting pretty steep at that size...

All of these drawings were just scaled off one drawing, and then external dimensions altered to typical sizes. For example, the 1" die is 2" outside diameter. The 1-1/2" die is 3" OD. You should be able to just multiply the numbers and make what you want.

Here is 4", merely scaled up 4X:

I probably wouldn't make the dang die over 7" long. Just saying. Nor use a 2" bolt to pull it.
