i guess what you really want is a lenco, manual shift with a clutch.

they just rely on wedges to apply the clutches in the drive train.

I'd completely forgotten about Lenco's. Yup, full manual, all the time. Tough, high horsepower capable. But requires frequent fluid changes, due to the clutch material ending up in the fluid and no filters. Not a big deal on a racecar that gets serviced between rounds, but a street car is a different story.

Mercedes does this exact thing in the upper echelon AMG models using a wet clutch.


They also use a solenoid shifted (robotic hand/foot is not far off) manual transmission and clutch set up in the Smart brand.

Porsche's latest 7 speed manual and 7 speed PDK use something like 80% of the same parts.

Lots of alternative ways to do it. But a lifetime of learning how, to make it work as a home built.
