A guy here in town had one for many years. He kept blowing the vw motors. He never would sell it.

Are you sure it is saab and not subie powered?

550 Spyders are my favourite non hot rod. I could never find the $$$ in one lump sum to buy a kit. Oh well, sigh....
Back to work on my cheap roadster, a little bit at a time.

And you're a better man for it, Stewart.
I was very close to doing one as a scratch built for my next project. I had ordered the plans for a frame, but the supplier showed very little interest in supplying his wares. And my cautious inquiries were met with a smirk; what do you mean scratch built? Why not buy a kit. That's what everyone does. Obviously, little do I know. :BH:
Better be to part of this loonie bin and do things the hard way :cheers:

I must admit to searching for just a fibreglass body for a while, but as you said, no one wanted to sell just the body.
Always wanted to be a jimmy dean. Ended up more of a "Rebel without a clue" ;).

Around 1961 or '62 a friend that ran a used sports car lot in Kansas City was offering a 550 Spyder for sale. A '54 or '55. IIRC he was asking $1,200 for it. At that time it was an obsolete race car with a Hirth crankshaft that had jumped a tooth or two, probably a couple of K to fix that if not more. No paint, just bare ally with a bunch of rock dents here and there. A beat up old race car. I fell in love with it and if I had a decent job back then I would have snatched it up.

Another one that got away. Too soon old, too late smart.

Knowing HF, they sell two models that look identical on the website but have different part numbers, and you have to figure out what tiny change they made on it from one part number to the next. :lol:

At a Grassroots Motorsports Rolex event I was parked right next to Chuck Beck and a couple of his Spyders for 2 days. We talked a lot and I got to hear him do his sales pitch often. I also got to see a lot of the car.

I found him to be likeable, even tho internet lore has him being a curmudgeon.

I was impressed, but at the same time I was thinking I would never do it that way. The cost, and the compromises, simply due to using Porsche bits just made them outrageous.

I was never a fan enough of the body style to really want one, but then again any kit car that at one time had a VW chassis I "don't appreciate" and the Spyder definitely had some VW kits.

To me they represent everything wrong with a Kit car and why Kit cars have such a poor reputation today.

On the other hand these things, OMG. I was lucky enough to see a real one the first or second day I ever went to a track to drive. Probably about the same time the Steve McQueen movie came out. The one I saw even had the plexiglass sliding Lemans style windows in the doors. I was still in high school and had no idea how rare they were, it was beathtaking in real life though.
