JD, you really need to learn how to sew. It'll be good for you. "Basting" is like clamping a part prior to welding, the clamp being either tape or hand-stitching.

WHAT!?!?! There ain't no meat involved? Ferrr-Gitt that!

Actually, my Mama used to sew a lot. I remember her talking about "basting stitches", which she usually put in with a white thread so it was visible.

Does make me think of cooking more than sewing, though...

That back window needs to be as large as you can get it. Blind spots are a bear with small back windows like that

Absolutely, the issue I've run into is that the headrests create the blind spot, making the window bigger will serve no useful purpose (unless I use clear vinyl for the whole back, wonder what a complete clear vinyl top would look like?) You can see the line of sight from the rear view mirror past the headrests. My other concern was being able to see the side mirrors which is the reason I have a dog leg in the front curtain instead of dropping the curtain straight down.

Joining panels:
Used seamstick along the 1/2" seam allowance, then basted the rear and intermediate panels together. The panels are notched with a small 1/8" V notch on the outer edge of the seam allowance to show dead center. Took it to the sewing machine to sew the hidden seam of a 1/2 Felled seam. Starting at the center and sewing out to each end insures the pattern remains true. Once done flipped it over and starting at one end sewed the top seam to complete a 1/2 Felled seam. Added the webbing locate loops while sewing the seam.

Next I used facing tape to reinforce around the curtain opening. you can see the dog leg for the side mirror visibility.

Figured out the top zipper placement so that its not seen from the outside. Cut to length, sewed on zipper stop, and sewed zippers to top.

 To many idea's watching Sialrite video's.

Panel construction continued.

Cut out the curtain openings, sewed the refer facing tape and hook and loop around the curtain openings.

Fitted the top and added the snaps to the headboard. Might have over engineered this but I was picturing going down the hiway at 70 mph and hitting a 40-50 mph headwind gust - if there were not enough snaps I would most likely experience a catastrophic event (not to mention crapping my pants and dealing with the Wifie's soiled nylons). So all I can say is that you can never have enough snap fasteners (plus they look sexy on vinyl).
Attachment:
IMG_0724.JPG

Attachment:
IMG_0725.JPG

The other issue I had was the nagging sag of the vinyl from the headboard corner longitudinal to the center bow corner arch. This is very eye catching, sagging in a convertible top.
Attachment:
IMG_0707.JPG

So I took out my trusty slide rule and pencil and after some mathematical figuring out the coefficient of vinyl sag when combined with span and track and changing radius of two arches, and a bit of head scratching and ear pulling I made a pattern. Transferred this to the PS and DS of the top, basted the seams, committed sewing fabrication, 1/2 Felled the seam, and there it was! No more sag.

IMG_0728.JPG

Lastly I started adding some rear snaps. These are reinforced with facing tape which will be sown into the perimeter seam so as to lessen the tension stress on the snap fastener.

Ad if you believe all that bs about the mathematical figuring , I have some ocean front property to sell you in Holden, Alberta (all I did was took some binder clips and pulled the seam in on the inside, clipped it with about 20 binder clips, while the top was on the car until it looked presentable, marked it, traced it, transferred the pattern to construction paper, copied it to both sides of the top and sewed).

Just like snap fasteners and angle grinders, you can't have too many binder clips.

Fitting the top continued.
Finished installing the snaps where required. Crawled in backed it outside to take some pics, sure changes the looks of the 7.
Next is side curtain fabrication.

I'm itching for one, maybe tomorrow. Thanks for the kudo's Nick.

Went out to the shop this evening.
Made the DS curtain template from the pattern material. Installed the other half of the zipper with basting tape on it and fitted the template to the zipper. I can now zip/unzip the template as I work on it.

The front and rear edges will have the hook side of hook and loop sewed to them. On the back side of this will be 1" facing tape, and to finish the edge double folded binding sewn to the edge. Had to purchase a 3/4" binding folder attachment to help do this. Played with setting this up on the sewing machine, here's the sample result.

And that's enough for today, the Captains a calling for a couple of sundowners before the night is over.

Curtain fabrication.

Basted the zippers to the pattern material, zipped in place and traced pattern of each side. Transferred pattern to .020" clear vinyl. Then basted facing tape, zipper, and hook and loop to the vinyl. I made a 90* lip on the lower edge of each curtain that will Velcro to the door sills. Basted the lip to the vinyl. Sewed the inner seam around the curtains. Then used 3/4" double fold binding and along with the binding attachment on the sewing machine, sewed a perimeter finish around the curtains. Installed some hook and loop on the door sills, and test fit the side curtains.

Ready for a test drive tomorrow - "rain or shine!" After that I want to take it apart to paint the bows and add some facing tape to areas where the vinyl will want to chafe.

Well, nothing broke, fell off, caught fire or exploded...
By Team Slotus standards, your test drive was bloody boring... Uhh, strike that! I meant it was a great success!
