Started separating the body from the make-shift chassis. Also, found a stash of walnuts in both rocker panels

Today I took the body off again to trim off the rest of the unnecessary sheet metal and cut out the inner rear wheel wells so that the tires would fit. Also notched the ends of the frame rails to match the body shape and provide needed tire clearance. Finished off the day by grinding off a ton of undercoating. What a mess!

My hubcaps from Summit/United Pacific came in yesterday. They are chrome plastic with an outer white edge for the white wall tire look. Made in Taiwan...but designed in Germany! Good quality/good price and they won't rust.

The tires fit the wheel opening very well and I am very happy with the body drop aesthetics.

What a cool little car!! I thought it was a Vespa 400. Good luck!! Can't wait to see it finished. I am building an Isetta at the moment. Don't you own the Single Cab hot rod? If so, are your headlights on that thing mounted backwards? I've followed your videoa on youtube on the project and always wondered that. Great job on that as well!! Well, take care

Thanks! Yes, the single cab is mine. The headlights were in spring loaded indexed mounts but have since been swapped out.

Started fabricating the upper strut mounts

Sourcing parts for a short driveshaft with a slip joint to accommodate the rubber mounted engine

The male and female yokes fit perfectly but unfortunately are never quite in-phase. Today I machined an alignment collar so that I can cut, rotate and weld the female yoke. Currently it is out of phase by 9 degrees which apparently will cause noise and vibration.

The 1310 series rear yoke has the same bolt pattern as the Miata diff but the holes are drilled for 1/2" bolts and the Miata is drilled for 5/16" (8mm). Machined some inserts to take up the slack

More work on fitting the spicer 1310 series flange yoke to the Miata diff. The stock driveshaft has a male pilot bushing built in but the spicer is a female. This bushing will get sandwiched in between to serve as the pilot. It is machined down from 2" round bar stock.

Progress on suspension. Made upper spring/shock mounts from 1/4" thick 6" wide flat bar. In the front, tubing comes up from the subframe to a brace that will bolt in place. It will be removable to extract the struts without separating ball joints and tie rods.

Image20170119_093043_resized by Ben Modified, on Flickr

Image20170119_094333_resized by Ben Modified, on Flickr

The brace will be clamped in place temporarily to determine proper ride height.
Once determined, a flange nut will be welded into the top of the trimmed off tube. Will also weld a plate over the 1 1/2" hole thru which the bolt will go.

Heated and bent the ends of the tubes to match the strut angle

Image20170120_123356_resized by Ben Modified, on Flickr

Started on the rear supports also. Mostly done, just need a couple of gussets.

Image20170120_171918_resized by Ben Modified, on Flickr

The supports are out from under the car. The front is on its wheels and the rear in on a floor jack waiting for the gussets.
