SO today in the garage I decided to make some changes so that I could either add individual air cleaners or an air box. I don't want to wear this motor out in a season from sucking up track grime and belt dust.

Yesterday after work I removed the exhausts, carbs, starter, and unbolted the engine. Today I pulled the motor and thought about how I could modify the mount plate to be able to slide everything forward an inch or two.
I cut the front bolts of as they were hitting the frame and drille the plate 2 inches back for bolts and welded them in. Not satisfied with the bolt spacing, I welded on an extension to the plate and drilled another set of holes further back.

With everything out I grabbed the plasma cutter and sliced a bit off the power transfer case to make a little extra room. I can't slide the motor far enough forward because the exhaust hits the firewall. So no choice but the go as forward as I can plus trim the side plates of the transfer case.

The rest of today was spent putting the motor in, checking clearance, seeing if the air cleaners would fit, taking it all back apart and making adjustments to gain clearance in one spot or another. Repeat, repeat, repeat...

Finally got it all to fit like it should about 3:30. Air cleaners in place and all put back together.
Only downside is now I need a longer drive belt. Good thing they build those right outside my office.

Rainy dreary day in the lowcountry. So what's a car nut supposed to do? Work on the car of course.

Started by burning out the exhausts. That was a smoky, smelly mess. I fired up the big propane burner and worked each pipe over the flame a section at a time until the smoke stopped. banged on em a little and a bunch of ash came out.

After they coole,d back on the car and started contemplating the rear wing.
I have a multi element wing that came with the car that was taken apart and a truss support that fit on another car, a grinder, hacksaw and some welding later I have a functional rear wing.

Then move up front with some leftover angle iron. I made the mounts to give me a good angle of attack for the wing and to fit under the body should I decide to take the wing off and run the body.

Life is better with wings.

That's all for now. Still waiting for richer jets to arrive.

A little more shopping for Take 2 today

Moving the engine means needing a longer belt. I came to work, talked with the guys and they haven't built the belt I need in the past 3 years. :(
Off to ebay I go and grab a pair of Gates belts for $30 each. Not bad considering they're usually $100 or more.

While I was at ebay I bought a combo tach speedometer unit for motorcycles. it's 0-12k rpm and 0-199mph. I think I'm safe in both regards.

I've started doing some math on the tuned pipes. No doubt in my mind now, these pipes weren't designed for this motor The length and reflector angle are limiting the revs. Best guess is these were built for a 1000 or 1200 cc motor with more power lower in the rpm band.
There's a set of pipes to build at some point in the future, but not before the first event Feb 18th. I'll be busy buying / seling / and moving between now and then.

Closing date on the new house is January 30th. Have to be out of Casa Busy no later than February 14th.

Garage day today. Wanted to make a few small improvements prior to start of the autocross season. I ordered a new belt, some k type thermocouples so I can monitor EGTs on all 3 cylinders, some more jets, and a cheap Chinese speedo / tach.

Today I thought I'd start by seeing if the car would start in cold weather. It did, not too happy, and wanted to bog at idle. Pretty sure adding the air filters means I have to go back to dquare one on tuning the carbs.

So I moved on to install the Chinese speedo / tach. Pics follow the process. I drilled and tapped the upright for the hall effect sensor. Then drilled the rotor for the button magnet. That will get some jb weld to hold it in place.

Last step was wiring. 12V "on" all the time for the memory circuit. Without that, it has to be calibrated for wheel size every time you turn it on.
12V switched to power up
Ground
Tach signal. The MSD box puts out a 12V square wave. The Chinese tach isn't too happy with the signal. I can either tap into the coil + to get a smaller pulse, or wire in a capacitor and resistor to create a filter to turn the square wave into a spike that makes the tach happier. Haven't decided which I'll do.

Last item was taking her for a drive around the block. I have some tunign to do. I can't get full revs and I don't have the right belt adjustment. One is too short and won't shift out. The other is too long and slips like a beast.

baby steps.

Those air filters look pretty short, I know you don't have much room...

Do you know what the front hubs and axle pins are? Just curious...

The air filters are tiny. Thankfully there are a lot of deep pleats, so they flow well.

I don't know what the hubs and pins are. I haven't done the research.

A little garage time today.
Carbs are NOWHERE close to where they need to be since I put on the air filters. HORRIBLY rich and flooding out.
Closing on the new house tomorrow, so I hope to get some time on the car next weekend. We'll see how it goes with the move, wiring, insulating, and dry walling the garage this week.

Not much time left before the seas starts Feb 18th

Signed the papers on the new Casa Busy today. A little more than 1/2 the size of the current place and a welcome change. I have an electrician coming later this week to pull a 100 amp service from the breaker box at the meter on the outside to the garage.
I'm installing the sub-panel and wiring the garage this week. he'll inspect, pull the permit and make the connection. Once inspection is done, I'll insulate and dry wall the garage. I'm hoping to move garage stuff next weekend if all goes well.

Inside move it slated for tomorrow with a little help from my neighbors 19 year old son and his best friend. With luck a nice crisp Benjamin each will be enough to keep them motivated for 6 or 7 hours.

Congrats on the new house! You seem so calm in the face of a big move.. I don't think wifey dearest would let me have any garage time in the run up to switching homes..

... My wife and I are talking about our eventual move for retirement (still a ways off), but she's wondering about finding a place where I can 'make my loud garage noises' without upsetting the new neighbors.. I've assured her they'll get used to it

We've been having the same conversation for the past several weeks. Wifey Dearest is worried I'll be burned at the stake by the HOA Nazis. This little A Mod is the loudest thing I've ever owned. It's louder than my V-8 drag Vega was with straight headers.
I think it's something about the sonic effect of expansion chamber pipes with a 2 stroke running up to 10k rpm.

It made our sound guy mad. We have a 97db limit to help us keep sites to run. He always said it was too loud. But the meter said otherwise. I only got a warning one. That was in the 95db range.

"Lucretia", my favorite MGB race car had a flat, off-key kind of sound at full song.
She scored a quite respectable 103 at Roebling Road. 104 gets ya sent home...
Loved that car...

I hit 93dB at Roebling last fall during the War at the Shore in the 7. I didn't think it was that loud. Maybe having a nice long pipe with an outward bend kept the noise away from me.

Update on this week.
Electrician came Wednesday and looked at the project, then gave me a set of instructions on how to do nearly everything myself. He'll be back when I have the trench dug and the pvc laid to help me pull wire and make the connection to the meter. I wired inside the garage on Wednesday. I was happily working away in there when I got a panicked phone call from my boss about a problem threatening to shut down F150 production. So yesterday morning at 6am my unhappy ass was on a plane to Milwaukee. I'm up here running a DOE to see if I can get component production back on stream.

Lack of progress update.
I got home Friday night at 11:30. Spent Saturday finishing up some inside wiring in the garage and installing R11 insulation.
All day yesterday hanging drywall. Still need to hang 2 pieces (my mental math was a little weak), then tape, mud, sand and paint.
I have to get that done pretty soon as we close with the new buyers on old casa busy next Wednesday 2/15.

I still need to get the carbs tuned on the A Mod and the correct length belt installed.

I WANT TO GO RACING ON 2/19!!!!!
