SO today in the garage I decided to make some changes so that I could either add individual air cleaners or an air box. I don't want to wear this motor out in a season from sucking up track grime and belt dust.
Yesterday after work I removed the exhausts, carbs, starter, and unbolted the engine. Today I pulled the motor and thought about how I could modify the mount plate to be able to slide everything forward an inch or two.
I cut the front bolts of as they were hitting the frame and drille the plate 2 inches back for bolts and welded them in. Not satisfied with the bolt spacing, I welded on an extension to the plate and drilled another set of holes further back.
With everything out I grabbed the plasma cutter and sliced a bit off the power transfer case to make a little extra room. I can't slide the motor far enough forward because the exhaust hits the firewall. So no choice but the go as forward as I can plus trim the side plates of the transfer case.
The rest of today was spent putting the motor in, checking clearance, seeing if the air cleaners would fit, taking it all back apart and making adjustments to gain clearance in one spot or another. Repeat, repeat, repeat...
Finally got it all to fit like it should about 3:30. Air cleaners in place and all put back together.
Only downside is now I need a longer drive belt. Good thing they build those right outside my office.
