I'm starting in on building a Lotus inspired car that I'm basing off an RX-8. I'll be using the entire drivetrain from the 8. Front and rear subframes and suspension, engine & trans. The 8 was my daily driver til it was rear ended and written off by the insurance company. There always seems to be people looking for/arguing over weights of these parts. I bought a hanging digital scale and got some hard numbers.

Front subframe- 198lbs
Rear subframe- 298lbs
Transmission- 103lbs
Complete engine including flywheel, clutch & exhaust manifold= 297lbs

Yeah everyone thinks rotaries are light - that weight is very similar to current 4-cylinder engines. My complete FWD Honda K-series drivetrain was right at 400 lbs as well.

Hmm, I'm currently racing an RX8 until I finish the locost, and seriously considered doing what you are doing. One word of caution, check the track width - especially if you are going to try to reuse the entire subframe. You may find it's a heck of a lot wider than it should be in a car like this.

I've been working on the chassis for the last 2 months or so in CAD. Track looks OK but I am running a +4 chassis design so that helps. This design uses inboard shocks in the front too. There was no way to make shocks look right in the stock locations.
