Got new to me (new old stock) Hoosiers for the rear from an autocross friend. Harder compound than I'd like, but you just can't beat new in the bag and free, even if they are 45 compound.

Also just pulled the trigger on a new project. It's a MARRS (Mid Atlantic Road Racing Series) formula 440.

Going to play with it as is for a bit, then repower for B Mod over the winter.

The Formula 440 is something I've wanted for quite some time now, but never can seem to find one when I have the $$$.

Lucky dog.

I got lucky on this one, time, money, and car all aligned. Have to drive a ways to get it, but worth the trip.

I took Friday off work and headed north on I-95 to Allentown, PA to pick up the F440.
Got the car loaded around 5:30 pm, then started home with plans to overnight in Hershey, PA

Saturday afternoon, arrived in Charlotte, NC to see Baby Girl and do some projects in her new apartment. She's getting settled in after moving from Chicago last month.

Got home last night about 7:30 after a 1500 mile round trip. She's nestled in the garage taking a little nap until this weekend when I'll pull the carbs for cleaning and flush the old stale gas out of the tanks.

More to come...

Very interesting new car. I've googled "MARRS Formula 440" and only find pictures of your new car (old ads when it was for sale) and a Youtube of some guys driving one in the snow. It looks like MARRS is only involved with bike racing now so are the Formula 440 cars defunct? Please tell us more about the machine. I'm really getting interested in small engined old formula and sports racing cars...a friend of mine just resurrected a DSR that was built in 1968, upgraded the engine to a 900cc Ninja and aye carumba is it fast!

I've posted questions to the F500 forums trying to get some more info. Once upon a time F440 was pretty big in the Mid Atlantic and Southeast regions.
Open wheel was replaced by flush side pods to prevent wheel entanglement back around 1983.

This weekend I'll put it up on stands and remove body panels to go searching for a builder plate.

Back in my kart racing days, I'd also looked at F440/F500 as a possible thing to do. Don't those chassis have rubber biscuit suspension?

They do. This one is a pretty old car from what I can tell and looks to only have rubber dampers on the rear. Front is a beam axle fixed to the chassis.

Found a little info online

This car is either a 79 or 80. Used to be registered with Atlanta Region SCCA. Roll bar #03-423

First monocoque F440 produced and was quite competitive back in the days dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Uses kart style steering with a high caster angle and Ackerman steering to go around corners "with ease" (We'll see)

So I've been getting feedback from people at Apex Speed and F500. Guys who know Formula 440 / 500 / 600 cars pretty well tell me this looks like a unmolested Stinger. Maybe the last one in existence in "as delivered" form. There were a few rules changes that took these off the track and forced owners to either do major conversions or scrap the cars.
Some important changes were requiring fuel cells in protected areas, adding side pods, lengthening the minimum wheelbase, and increasing the roll bar diameter. This car has a big OD roll bar, but looks to me like it was delivered that way. None of the other car killer changes are in place.

Now I'm faced with a decision, keep a cool piece of racing history intact and play with it and accept the limitations of 40 year old technology OR cut it up to suit my wants.

I'm leaning toward keeping her as is. Add a fresh set of slicks, rebuild the carbs, and tune the clutch and final drive ratios for autocross.

Keep it as is.

You can always make another one, to your liking, once you've experienced the original.

There are probably a few improvements that would be noninvasive and reversible should the urge to tweak come to the forefront.

Some people never have anything except ideas. Go do it.
Emissions & fuel economy haven't exactly been areas of strength for past rotary power plants, but absolutely no one with a soul has ever cared.

The older I get the more I like to see the originals. In today's world it is to easy to just scrap history. We need things from the past to remind us of what it took to bring us to today's slot car racers.

My .02  Red

I heard from Atlanta SCCA yesterday. Their records don't go back to the number on the roll bar. This car is 03-423, records only go back to 03-650. Still ancient history to get into 3 digit log book numbers.

Last night I heard from Steve Z, who bought the car in 1990 as a basket case and restored it.
He said it wasn't wrecked but it was all apart. I guess the owner had thought about a class legal conversion, then just stopped. The guy he bought it from road raced his Corvette in SCCA, so he had more important things on his mind.

Steve ran it MARRS through the mid 90's.

So here's my plan
1. Put on a fresh set of slicks, brake pads, and rebuild the carbs
2. See how it runs in dead stock form and test to see if I need to adjust clutches and final drive ratios for our short, tight courses we set up.
3. Drive the SNOT out of it in our October and November events. I'll drive the A Mod end of this month up at Black Lake.
4. Depending on power and handling I'll make more decisions. I can always blow it all apart and use this frame as a model to build a 600 with proper front suspension.

I spent a little time with the F440 today. First an update from last weekend.
I got the fresh slicks on last weekend and fired it up for a test run. As soon as it started, the carb bowls started spraying fuel everywhere. Who puts plastic bowls on a carb anyway??? Shut it down ad pulled the carbs.
Pulling the carbs the boots disintegrated, so I came inside, ordered a new pair of boots, and checked the price on bowls for the Lectrons... $50 each for plastic, $150 each for machined aluminum.

Went to the cabinet and pulled out a pair of Mikuni TMX flat slides and a pair of VM round slides. Wanted to see if either would work with the existing throttle cables. The TMX's work just dandy with the throttle cables, so a quick cleaning to be sure the jets weren't clogged.

now, back to your regularly scheduled today.

Put the carb boots on, slipped the TMX's into the boots and tightened up the clamps. Easy peasy.
Checked to see if I had enough throttle response.

And WFO with the pedal against the stop.

Cool beans, now on to the next change I want to make. The guy I bought it from did some Solo and some hillclimbs in it. I looked in the big ol' box O spares and found several more front sprockets. A bit of digging and I found what I wanted, a 15 tooth.
So I go to loosen the socket head screws in the locking collar... no dice. Added penetrating oil, ate lunch, went back, and still no dice.
Searched for my torch, couldn't find it, but found the propane bottle in a box of stuff from the move. :?

Off to the store and buy a torch. Got one that will be happy with Propane to Mapp gas. Applied LOTS of heat... still no dice.

So I grabbed the TIG torch and welded a nut on top of the socket head cap screw. Sheared off the nut without loosening the bolt.
At that point I said Phuck it and grabbed the angle grinder and cutoff wheel. 2 minutes later the lock collar was in the trash can.

Then I got to spend another hour getting a stuck sprocket off of the jackshaft where it had evidently been happily living for a couple of decades.

Once I got the sprocket off, I grabbed some 220, 440, and 1000 grit sandpaper to clean and polish the axle where the new sprocket would go. Then some grease / antiseize applied, a new key installed and bolted up.

Attachment:
sprocket1a.jpg

That swap changes my final drive ratio from 3.33 to 4.0:1
I'll give up top end, but it should accelerate like nobodies business.
:D
