If you build your own frame how are you to get a Notarized affidavit detailing the frame's construction? Besides that, that is a pretty helpful website.

I have never built a kit car, but have built and had FAA certificated 3 airplanes, and suspect the process would be similar (though much easier) for a car frame.

Just have a couple of pages with a materials list and a paragraph or two detailing the construction process, have those pages notarized, then stick that and a bunch of captioned photographs documenting the construction in a binder, then bring the lot to the DMV when you get your inspection.

What specific info do you need? Is your car a kit or home built?

Here's the good news for Florida Locost builders. Fla. has adopted rules to recognize our cars as a "Custom Car" which now includes a provision that should allow a Locost to be titled as a 196x Lotus 7 "replica". You even get to buy an Antique tag for your car ($7.50)!

My Florida Locost was titled (registered) last May, just before this new statute was signed into law.

I'm now trying to get my title "modified" so I have a "Custom Car (Replica)" instead of "assembled from parts" thing.

Fla has again changed the forms you use to title our cars. Scroll down this page to Tim Taylor's post that has a lot of detailed information about the forms now used. I have updated the article on my website. I did not directly quote Tim but rather linked to his post below. Basically you can NOT get your car titled as a replica unless it was made by a registered [real] manufacturer. But we might have a chance as a "Custom" car instead of ASPT (assembled from parts).

As the most recent LocostUSAer to go thru the registration process I thought I would post the steps I followed to get my vehicle on the road (though it's not there yet).

Try as I might I couldn't get the DMV folks to list my car as anything other than a 2011 ASPT (assembled from parts) though YMMV so try is for yourself.

Below are the forms that need to be filled out. Some of them are a bit confusing but read all of the boxes and it should become self explanatory. I only missed an initial and signature box because I thought I might have to sign it in their presence, I was wrong

You will also need the title and Bill of Sale http://www.flhsmv.gov/dmv/forms/btr/82050.pdf for the donor car and all of the receipts for the purchased major parts (see Statement of Builder below).

Application for Registration:
Section 1: is pretty simple to fill out.
Section 2: year is current year of completed car, make is ASPT, type is roadster, weight is not necessary, color is the primary vehicle color
Section 3: Second checkbox for 'Custom Vehicle"

Application for Certificate of Title:
Under Check Application Type, check Original
Section 1: is pretty simple to fill out.
Section 2: year is current year of completed car, make is ASPT, type is roadster, weight is not necessary, color is the primary vehicle color, length gets filled in. Nothing else in section 2 gets filled out.
Section 3: check Private Use
Sections 4 & 5 are left blank
Section 6: if you are using a new speedo with odometer fill in either the 5 or 6 digit appropriately and the mileage should be 000,000 (for 6 digit). If you are re-using the donor's odometer fill in the current reading. Either way check box 3 for NOT actual mileage.
Section 7 thru 13 are left blank until after inspection.

Statement of Builder:
This along with form 84491 are used to describe the major parts used in the build. The DMV considers major components (as would be used on our cars) as fenders, hood, cowl (scuttle), rear quarter panel, trunk lid, floor pan, engine, frame & transmission.
Section 1: you're getting good at filling this in by now.
Section 2: This is where you fill in all of the above listed parts and where they came from. things like frame, quarter panel and floor pan would be homemade with the source as the location where you bought the materials. Nose, scuttle, etc would list the manufacturer of those items and be listed as new. Engine/transmission would be used followed by the VIN of the donor.
Section 3: check both boxes and sign.
Section 4: If you can build a car you can figure this out.
Section 5: It says official use
On 84491 the second page asks for a description. This is the States get out of jail free card. this should be a brief description of the build process, what you are basing your build on (1963 Lotus 7 or whatever) and a statement that says the vehicle is roadworthy.

After all of this go to the DMV submit the info pay the $40 and they will give you an inspection date and a piece of paper that will allow you to get a 10 day temporary tag.

This is the process I followed and, so far, I have been successful.

If you have a donor car with it's title then I think you do venture into the area of the DMV people thinking along the lines that you are in affect putting a new body, frame etc or modifying the donor car. And the title of the donor is what they are actually dealing with to represent what you ended up with. I think ASPT in this case means you used a lot of parts from a titled car. So my idea is to get away from using parts from a "titled" car similar to what happens when you buy parts from a junk yard.

If you bought the same parts that require a VIN number of the car(s) the parts came off of from a junk yard the difference is that the junk yard has turned the title in as "scrapped". I just called my favorite junk yard and it's an involved procedure that they have to go through but basically parts are sold from a car that in affect doesn't have a [normal] title.

has the info about scrapping a car in Florida. If you look at 319.30(1)(i)1 you will see the exact same wording as used in one of the four new forms you presented above to describe the parts a Locost builder would use to -build- the car.

I am in the process of contacting my DMV person to see if an individual can even scrap a car [title] similar to what a junk yard does. If that's possible then the buyer could buy a titled donor then "scrap" the car [title] and use the parts to build a custom/replica car. He'd have a bill of sale for the car to be able to scrap it and then just use the parts with the cars VIN number to build an entirely different car. In this case, a Custom/Replica of a 196x Lotus 7.

It may take awhile to get an answer but I'll report back when I find out.

OK, it's been a l-o-n-g time since anybody's posted here.

I'm going through the titling process for a 1963 Lotus Replica and have followed all the advice/directions on this link.

I bought my completed car, but never titled/registered. The builder assigned a frame number. DMV is asking who approved/authorized this number?

How have you addressed this issue?

6 months later. I have a MSO with the previous purchasers name on it. He never titled the car in his name. He gave me a Bill of sale with major parts listed. Anybody got any ideas on going about getting a title in Florida? Thanks Bill
