I could have sworn that someone was building using the old VW Bug ball joint uprights, Can somebody point me to the thread?
Thank you

Your request didn't ring any bells for me. A search turned up several hundred pages. Went through a couple of years worth and couldn't find anything worthwhile. What were you hoping to find out?

We definitely used them back in my Super Vee days.

Hi Chris
That is the one. The photos are not very clear. What ball joints did you use or did you convert to rod ends? If so what did you do about the top ball joint? Did you leave the standard adjuster in place? Alternatively did you make your a-arms to suit the stock VW ball joints?
BTW I love your build being involved with VW's my whole life and had considered a build similar to yours.
On another note for anyone considering a transaxle consider a Lotus 7,type 4. The rear of the body should be long enough to cover the transmission. In fact I have done some research using various photos and I suspect that if one was to build using the VW engine hanging out the back it should fit. After all I have read of people "accusing" the type 4 of looking like a dune buggy, so build the whole thing using VW parts :-) including the front beam suspension.
Thank you
Tony

I'll post better pictures later.

The top I reused the adjuster but drilled out the hole to 5/8 for a spherical rod joint.
The bottom I redrilled the taper to match a chevy ball joints. Then I used an extended length balljoint due to the VW hub does not have much height.

I originally used VW disk brake ball joint hubs but last winter switched to Drum hubs and mounted Wilwood calibers with an adapter bracket.

Regards,
Chris

If I don't respond feel free to send me a PM as I'm not on this forum much these days.

I just reread your post. I am intrigued by your use of disk/drum brake hubs. Except if this is from a model other than Type1, there are no separated hubs. The rotor or drum brakes have the wheel bearings installed in them. Could you please clarify this.
Thanks
Tony

Correct,

The bearings are in the rotor, there is no separate hub like most modern cars.

This is what confused me
"I originally used VW disk brake ball joint hubs but last winter switched to Drum hubs and mounted Wilwood calibers with an adapter bracket.".
This seems to say that you switched to drum brakes with Wilwood calipers. I am sorry if I misunderstood.

That is correct, I switched from the Disk Brake spindle to the Drum spindle when I installed the Willwoods. The stub part of the spindles that the bearings go on is the same between both spindles and thus you can mount the ball joint disk brakes rotors on the drum spindles. The reason I switched to the drum spindles is that it was much easier to fab a bracket for the Wildwoods using the drum spindles. The Disk brake spindles already have tabs cast into them to mount the caliber but it is a weird bolt pattern.

Okay now I understand. When you mentioned hubs I was visualizing something different and very common on other car makes eg Mustang, Miata which is a separate rotating piece that houses the bearings, the brake rotor attaches onto and also has the lug nuts for the wheel, and as we both know does not exist on the VW. And yes the disk brake spindle/upright would require some sort of adapter to install a different caliper.
