Geeez, these Corvette guys are sure learning how to tease us! Ten minutes after I responded to Tom's post, I got notification of a new teaser video for the Corvette convertible, and the C8.R race car. They will be revealed "in the Fall" according to text in the video located here.

The convertible looks awesome, but you're going to have to pause the video to actually see it. There's actually more video on the C8.R, which makes me very happy.

Cheers,

So not a Blackwing, but perhaps borrowing the hot V technology to locate the turbos between the DOHC heads?
GM has the technology if the bean counters let it out the door.
Could be interesting. :D
Or not. :cry:

@seattletom

Yup, it could be interesting, Tom. That's all I know myself about the new engine. I say, we'll likely know more when the C8.R data is released this fall. The C8.R testing at Sebring definitely had one or more turbos. The V6-like sound it had may be because of the flat plane crank V8, and the 9,000+ RPM redline it supposedly has. Who knows for sure at this point?

I love the idea of a WEC super car with the hybrid best of all.

Cheers,

There are two new developments:

1) Convertible video (scroll down 1/3 page, it's pretty innovative) here

2) C8.R race car story and video with sound

The C8.R sound is very different than the old pushrod V8. They won't say what engine it has, but it must be the new 5.5L, flat plane crank, DOHC engine yet to be officially rolled out.

Cheers,

So what is the stroke of that flat-plane crank?
5.5L = 335".
FP's seem to have a limit of around 3" before vibration gets bad, unless they used counterbalance shafting.
So is the engine over-square?
9K RPM sounds like it!
Too bad it would probably become a dog without all the wiz-bang "Engine management" computers. :(
How long before used engines become available at reasonable prices to play with?
Curiously, I have no real interest in the car, just some of the parts.

@RichardSIA

Some of the motoring press have been briefed on such things, Richard. Once the official roll-out happens, I suspect we'll see online stories very quickly. I have the feeling the big time reveal of the C8.R will come pretty soon, maybe in October. It's scheduled to race in January, 2020 at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. However, for right now, no one is saying much.

It's pretty unusual for a new race car to debut at a 24 hour race. That's pretty gutsy, if you ask me. It also tells me they have done a LOT of testing. I'd bet they've run a 24 hour test session somewhere.

Cheers,

Two little updates:

1) Is this the Z06 version of the new C8 with the flat plane DOHC V8? The Corvette Club people seem to think so. It was video'ed testing in the mountains east of San Diego, CA.

2) The C8.R will be in its first race for the 24 Hours of Daytona on January 25th. Here's a nice video of the two C8.Rs testing in the Roar before the 24 a week or two ago.

Cheers,

Yupper I would not bet against the Vette's. The Pratt-Miller platforms are well proven and the G.M. engine dyno's can simulate just about any track in the world. The hard part, is going 24hrs without crashing.
