To me, the left motor mounts appear to be THE motor mounts and the right side mounts are basically torque rods. Another way of looking at the problem?

Make sure you have enough travel to turn the wheels enough. The primary limiting factor is the pinion location to clear the motor. If you do not, shortening the steering arms will help but then the rack would need to be further aft to prevent reverse ackerman and it can't be any further back. Another alternative is to put the inner tie rod joint further outboard but then you create bumpsteer. This is why I suggested the other rack design but maybe you can turn the wheels far enough.

It's almost eerie how nicely the rack's input shaft falls next to the motor.. The shortened rack fits well and is centered right where I need it (other than being 1+" forward), and still gives me 'full' lock-to-lock steering rack/wheel steering-turning.... as a matter of fact I think I run out of Berkeley body 'space' for the the wheels to turn before the rack reaches it's end-stop.. I may have to make stops/spacers to go on the rack ends to limit wheel turn- the best possible problem to have in this case..

-Kartracer47.. I agree- the passenger side mounts do in fact seem to serve as the 'primary' (more substantial) motor mounts, while the long-legged driver's side motor mounts will really just serve to elevate/suspend that side of the motor.. Having said that, once I get more of the car's frame built in, I'll go back in and make each of the driver's side mounts into some sort of tripod configuration to be super solid once installed (it was much simpler to achieve motor mount stability on the passenger side).

Steering rack mods... The NA Miata rack is now quite a bit narrower to suit my needs.. I chunked 8.25" out of the rack body, and shaft now measures 16 1/8" total length.. I had to drill (16mm) and tap (17 @1.0) the passenger side end to accept the stock inner tie rod..

Also shown are the (4) small welds on the input/pinion shaft from the now de-powered rack.. This is done to eliminate the bit of play that Mazda engineered in to make their power steering function.. No more PS, now no more 'slop'... I chose not to weld all the way around so as not to introduce too much heat and possibly warp the shaft... even if these 4 welds were to fail, the shaft is still OEM spined, so there is no danger of catastrophic failure..

...I bought a few more R6 shocks on Ebay to get to the 4 I need for the build.. I'll be dealing with those soon..

Also a few pics as I pull the axles apart to have them resplined on the outer ends... The axles were sourced aftermarket (Rockauto) to fit a 1995 Miata (this gets me my needed bolt-up to the Rav4 diff axle flanges)... it just so happens that the aftermarket axles are thick enough to be resplined on the outer ends to accept early Miata outer CVs.. ...as it happens the aftermarket axle's new outer CVs are 'staked' on and do not just pop off with a C clip like you'd think they would- something has to be destroyed to remove them; I chose to chop the end of the axle off as it's being shortened anyway ... it is technically impossible to pull and reuse the aftermarket outer CVs, so I'm having the aftermarket axles shortened to accept the Mazda outer CVs to make things serviceable in the future.. confusing, but it makes sense to me

Now the axles/Miata CV race ship to Dutchman Axles to be shortened to 11.0" and 11.75" and resplined..

Just some measurements and part numbers here so I remember what I did for when I build Berk #2...

The oil filter is a shorty at 2.5" long, which will clear the steering linkage (other filters are 3.25 long and get in the way)..

...Now the rack is narrowed and reassembled.. Time to build mounts.. in these pics I've mocked in the coil over on the passenger side (what will end up being the more difficult side) just to see if knowing it's eventual placement will alter the rack mount in any way.. looks like they'll play nice together- so on with mounting the rack solid in the next set of pics..

*I'll come back to it later, but it looks like I'll be fabbing a set of custom bell cranks for the front shocks as the R6 geometry will not work in the space allowed.. I'm hopeful I'll have better luck using the OEM R6 pivots in the rear..

Last few... probably a bit of overkill on the rack pics, but it allows you to write your own 'nice rack' joke... maybe it's just me

1-20-20..

Last few on this day.. I set these R6 coils up about where I intend to mount them just to see if the angles are close.. I have not yet worked out the needed bellcrank ratios, but it looks like I can at least fit them here to start and fine-tune the bellcranks later..

The rack longitudinal location doesn't look that bad. My spitfire came with much steeper angles on the tie rods and the balls were in the wrong place.

Not that it matters now, but looking at how far forward the engine normally is on these, I wonder if rear steer would fit better, sliding it forward 2-3 inches then there would be nothing in the way up front and there would be better access to the back above the rack. Drive shaft angle could be slightly better also. I'm guessing you would run out of hood clearance.

I think I found the ideal setup for this: an 80s Honda v65 magna 1100. Shaft drive, reverse rotation audi diff, comes with a hydraulic clutch, six speed. No need to turn it sideways so that opens up suspension and driveshaft alignment options. This guy put one in a midget by flipping the diff.

ccrunner,
Very innovative build, I am definitely enjoying your progress and squirreling away ideas.
Thanks,
Eric

Thanks for chiming in Eric.. I'm loving the challenges this build presents.. almost always it comes down to not enough room to meet a need, and how to work around the lack of space..

I love looking at other people's builds and 'squirreling away'/adapting their ideas.. My wife knows my internet surfing is harmless because instead of leering at questionable, inappropriate stuff, I'm trolling around looking for some hot, hot, vintage car action..

My latest thing is researching how to design and fabricate suspension bellcranks... scandalous

--ccrunner

***BTW- I've just finished replacing all of the missing photos that were lost from the site crash last year.. Back at 100%, and this build is now in real time (1-30-2020) :)

Speaking of vintage car action... thank you Miatav8 for sending me down a 2-day rabbit hole on this v65 option  ...

This guy did a great job stuffing a bike engine into his MG with relatively few issues.. as he stated, it almost fits like it was made for it.. I like the v65 engine/platform, but for me to swap to it I wouldn't gain much performance, and that left-side shaft exit would mean I'd have to go right hand drive.. not a deal killer, but a consideration.. still, a cool, plentiful little mill that might package well for many microcars(?).. A tape measure would tell for sure, but the unusual 'long' front-back nature of the motor could be just what someone would need for their project..

Thanks for the link.. cool to see what people are doing with this old bike/motor (love that there was a supercharger setup  )..
