It absolutely breaks my heart that the two of you had to go through something that nobody should ever have to experience...However, I also can't help but think about what a blessing it is to have journeyed along side such an amazing woman for more than 50 years.

Lonnie, accept my condolences. it's hard to say something here. I hope you have children, grandchildren? and they will help you survive this tribulation. It’s difficult to cope from this, it’s almost impossible. Do not lose heart, please.

Wow, sad to hear. Condolences for your loss Lonnie, I haven't been visiting this forum as much as I used to and just saw it now. I hope everything is going as well as can be and you have family and friends nearby to help you through this. Cancer sucks.

Thanks to each of you for your expressions of sympathy. I'm coming out of the "fog" and today I'm going out into the garage for the first time.

I'll just be documenting what I've already done, but not shown in this build log, and to getting my thinking back into the build. I'm very fortunate to have a nice support system in my neighbors and friends here in town, so it's all coming together for me.

Thanks again,

Lonnie

So, what I was working on was the boot of the car. I decided I wanted to get that all done structurally before I moved on to the front suspension design, steering gear, etc. It's part way finished, but below is the 7 that inspired my overall design.

Tire Carrier #2 - small.jpg

It would have been simple just to weld in some tubes, but I always like to have options including remaking a bolt-on piece instead of repairing the chassis if it gets bumped.

I welded on some gussets (shown tacked here) with weld-in nuts on back so it could be mounted/dismounted blind.

For the tire carrier side, I welded on some 12 gauge tabs and placed some shaped rubber pads between the tire carrier tab and the chassis side mounting gussets. I'm hoping this will be sufficient to stop any vibration from the carrier traveling through to the chassis.

The bare bones carrier (minus hold downs, license plate mount area, etc.) looks like this.

While the license plate mounting plate will be much larger, this gives you an idea of where things go. The license plate mount will actually come up higher than shown here. It's just that the double stick tape would not hold the weight of the plate if it was mounted lower on the letters.

I have the overall mounting plate designed to carry both a standard Euro plate plus a California plate. The metal is all selected and cleaned but still needs to be trimmed and bent.

Mounting plate design.jpg

I want all the lights on it too. I found an LED license plate light and an LED backup light that mount through the standard holes of the California plate.

The Irish version of the Euro plate will go under the CA plate and run the full width of the mounting plate similar ro my design inspiration. I plan to pass that damn character test [LOL].

I couldn't make up my mind about the center brake light location. Then, by chance, I spotted an ad for a Jeep aftermarket product I thought would be great, and put some religion into the SUV heathens when they saw it light up. Jeeps and my SN95 Mustang have the same wheel bolt pattern.

Here's a mockup of how it fits in my application.

These are vendor photos of the product in use.

Spare Tire Brake Light.jpg

I'm planning on a leather strap to go round the tire circumferance to keep it from bouncing around. Also, I plan to hinge a lockable, steadying and holding arm at the top of the two vertical pieces to hold the spare in alignment and keep it from being stolen.

Obviously, I have a lot more work to do.

Cheers,

The carrier looks good Lonnie. I had to smile about the Jeep rear light. Just happens Karen and I just purchased a Rubicon and I'm looking for ideas to bling it up. That light looks pretty cool.
Hope all is well with you, nice to see you back to building.
Cheers

This forum appeals to unique creative individuals, a brotherhood and sisterhood of like minded people who share in each other's passion for doing practical things. We share and delight in each others victories over challenges, and also share the grief when a such an outstanding member such as Lonnie suffers. I can whole heartedly say [Fornicate] Cancer.

Condolences mate, I hope you can find some solace in the great work you are doing on your car.

Cheers,
Marcus

The spare looks great Lonnie. In fact, it looks so good, now I have to borrow it. Just when I thought I was done with the boot area fabrication....

Really cool plan for the spare. I wonder if a narrow rachet tie-down strap could be hidden underneath the leather strap?

Hi Lonnie,

I considered adding the spare ala the original but decided against it. You are making me reconsider! Originally I wanted the clam shell fenders but couldn't get them to fit and abandoned that thought. Then went without the spare.. Well I'm pretty sure I can get the spare mount done. Just have to do some reverse engineering.

Good job as usual.

Cheers!

Love your inspiration 7! And As a former (yeah, I'm definitely weird) Citroen owner, love the DS in front of it!

Thanks to everyone for the nice compliments and the suggestions. Well, everyone but Martin, anyway. Because of Martin, I've got to consider going back to the drawing board because of this idea. Will it ever end? [LOL]

I ran out of motivation for a while, but I think I've found my mojo again.

Cheers,

I can see you making it work Lonnie! It'll come in really handy when you need to nudge the car sideways in the garage. Especially once the second build starts...
