I can see the end of the build phase of the latest 7 approaching. Then there will be the weeks / months of waiting for NCDMV to do their thing.
Autocross is all but non-existant due to COVID, so it's time for a new project.

I watch Craigslist and Marketplace daily and always on the lookout for fun or a deal.
Last week up pops a 72 Spitfire "Project" aka jigsaw puzzle or basket case, depending on your terminology.

I was a little excited about it but only a little. A week goes by, then another week and it's still for sale. Today we were out looking at houses my our Daughter, and I realized it was a really short side trip to go see the car. A few messages later and we're there.

Sitting in a pole barn is a 72 Spitfire in resale red
Rebuilt 1500 motor and transmission in the car, plus the original 1298 and gearbox
Body was frame off restored 5 years ago. New quarters, new floors, new trunk pan, new rockers, new battery tray and patched undercowl. There are receipts and stickers still on the floor and trunk pans.
I went over the body from stem to stern and it's all metal.
Engine purrs like a kitten with a brand new Weber downdraft on it and new header from Moss.
Seats are redone
New in box carpets.
Hydraulics redone

It needs a top, new door cards, wiring needs to be DPO'd and has a rock chip in the windshield. Windshield is a sshame because it's a new windshield done when the body was painted.

Needs to be put back together.

that looks too easy for one of your projects, but you could look at Canley classics for some upgraded brakes and suspension ideas.
or make the stuff yourself, all spherical rod ends, tubular A arms and the like,

I'm mulling over how much love and attention this is going to get.
It could just turn into an assemble and flip project.

I can throw $1500 budget for parts plus 80-100 hours and it's a $5 or $6k car based on recent ebay sales

I havent seen a body this clean since 1975

I got it home about 2 hours ago. Unloaded and carried the boxes and boxes of parts into the garage.

First step will be sorting to see what's good and what's garbage.

I washed off the 5 years of barn dirt.

I have to run back down later this week to grab the spare engine and trans. Not enough room on the trailer or mommy mobile for everything that came with it.

Spits are fun. Not as exciting as a Locost, but fun in their own right. Hope you find all the bits in those boxes.

Me too Chuck, some of those little trim bits not currently on the car are either pricey or unobtanium.

I'm hoping the new in the box carpets haven't become a mouse house. :ack:

Some good news and some so-so news
Great news:
I have a FUNCTIONING Smiths bourdon tube water temp gauge. When is the last time you saw one of those.
Actually I have TWO!!! one on the car and a spare in the boxes o goodies.

Good news:
found the stainless windscreen trim big pieces, but not the 2 small center pieces top and bottom. Should be available online, worst case, I can make them
The "new" carpet set has been home to rodents. Thankfully it isn't eaten, just dirty. Will get vaccumed, and most likely some high pressure soapy water. At least it isn't toast, all but the rubber and carpet floormats are usable
The door cards and rear cockpit panel are there and in decent shape
The trunk floor card is there and in decent shape with Good new in box trunk mat
Seats cleaned up beautifully
5 cap, rotor, points, condensor sets
4 sparkplug sets
5 oil filters
most of an oil filter relocation kit

So-so news
Brake lines need replacing. some are there, some are not
Haven't located all trim pieces yet. Went through boxes and looks like window finish trim and rear cockpit trim are nowhere to be found
transmission doghouse is toast. looks like it was good when pulled, but suffered from a leak in the barn roof
needs a rubber trim seal kit
needs a top
3 parade boots, all with rodent damage
3 tonneau covers both with rodent damage. 1 was "new"

Bad news wiring. A good bit under the dash is FUBAR. I'm probably best served coughing up the $500 for a whole car wiring harness.
At a minimum it needs a front and gauge section

Here's the odd bit. The guy who died spent a METRIC CRAP TON of money on replacing sheet metal. Floors, trunk pan, rear quarters, rear lower valance, etc
Then had mediocre at best bodywork and paint. I can see the poorly feathered ding repairs now that I've got the dirt off. The paint a lot of orange peel and dust nibs. Paint is not as good as I did on tetanus spraying it in my back yard.

TooBusy, isn't Forum member RichardSIA a big Spitfire guy? I seem to remember that he has many Spits and tons of spares. You should try him for your needs. Good Luck, Bill

Actually, I only have one Spitfire which I have decided to "Restore*" since it is apparently worthless otherwise.
I have an extra Spitfire engine and a couple of trans which are now slated to become a Locost build using some GT6 frames and suspension.
Then there is a "Complete" but rusted sills GT6, which will probably become another Locost.
And the GT6/Buick V6 "Trick-6" to complete.

*Restore, yah, but like this instead of the current faded "Arrest me" red!
Image

Of course there is the guy down the street trying to sell me two more round-tail Spitfires and a TR7......

Any chance you want to part with a transmission doghouse?

They are originally shaped cardboard.
I only have one that may be usable so have to keep it.
