I think either wrapping the rearmost header tube for about a foot from the head would be enough, or a small aluminium heat shield between it and the starter. It's cheap insurance. Any more than that is probably overkill though with these drafty engine bays. That's my completely uneducated guess though.

A heat shield is the best solution as,
wrapping the pipe will severely shorten it's lifespan.
Wrapping the starter will keep heat in and block air cooling.

The late 90s dakota starter is a small gear reduction unit and is interchangeable. I bought this one for a d100 with a 318 that I am putting long tube headers on if you want some measurements:

Nice tip, I really like those Nippon (Denso) starters. They are very popular and long lasting.

Harley switched to that style starter in 81 and still uses it today.

Well I've reached the point in the build where I would like to hear some noise, especially since rebuilding the leaning tower of power.
So I reworked the engine compartment wiring enough so that I just needed switched power to the ignition resistor and rad fan, and be able to crank the engine over.

A slant slick is not supposed to sound that good. Don't you know nutin'?

I noticed you already replaced the starter but just in case it gets melty.

I took the new starter apart and put real grease in it. Not sure how to describe the goo that was in it but at least there wasn't much of it to remove.

There is one version with the ring stud for the control wire (like my link) and the other uses a molded plastic connector to mate with a dodge proprietary connector but it is the same basic starter. It could be modded easy if you get the wrong one.

Bentwrench, I like these too and try to find this design starter for various vehicles.

Also found a great oem rad fan for $40 that includes two relays, a harness, pulls a little less than 40 amps, two speed, 17 inch, with an integral 18x21 shroud and about 3 inches thick. Check out the 06 and newer pt cruiser fan. I put one on the d100 but had to make brackets from .050 aluminum that picked up the original fan shroud bolt holes and were held on to the fan with #10 screws and nylocks. Trimmed off the molded in brackets since I could not use them.

Warren asked a question - I got the side pipes from Speedway, used complete set on the T-Bird 7, one pipe of a complete set on the S10 build, and the remaining pipe on this build. I'm very happy with these pipes so far.

So let me invite you into the squirrel cage thats inside this old brain.
So today I wake up, scratched, scratched a bit more, opened the fridge door and scratched, closed fridge door, and made a coffee. I'm thinking now..........I cobbled the ignition wiring enough to get the car running.
Now I'd like to get the rest of the wiring sorted out. Now to do that properly I need a fire wall. For a fire wall I need to build the scuttle, to build the scuttle to the lines of the car I need to mount the nose, to mount the nose I need to fab up a nose mount. And that's how I roll........

My scuttle is very much like yours except for the angle steel/ How did you bend those? Really nice.
