My boot cover is just about complete and I was planning on just using typical snaps around the perimeter to secure it. The button portion will go on the cloth, which is pretty straightforward, but I've never secured the a snap receptacle to metal before. Can I just rivet them on or do I need a special snap that will work with a rivet? Am I missing something entirely, is there a better way to do this than snaps?

Looking at these 2 links, assuming I'm understanding your desired usage.
Looks like it can be done via rivet or screw. I'd guess the rivets would be better for long term use & less likely to back out

Rivets work just fine with the normal snaps. You might have to modify the rivet gun tip to get down inside the snap, but that's about the only issue.

Instead of rivets, machine screws using washers/nuts on the inside could be used if you want removeability. Finding the right sized machine screw head/shank would be necessary. The tops and bottoms of snaps come in standard sizes, just make sure you use matching sets.

I like that idea Tom. Could get a washer back there, spread the load out a bit, and if they ever come lose, could just tighten them up.

Flat head countersink screws. Is a perfect fit. Just take the button assembly to the hardware store if worried about the fit.

You can also buy washers specifically for rivets or drill and cut your own. Use a nylock, lock washers, or jamb nuts on machine screws.

Lift-the-dot fasteners are really old school. They have been around for many years. My 1952 Sunliner had them. However I recall seeing them on much older applications. Look decent and hold quite well. And cheap.

That's exactly what I did, had to grind the tip to fit the button recess. Pop rivets are the way to go.
