Anoyone use those A/C & heater assemblies from carbuilder?

Post by CodySimonson »

I've been looking at these a/c & heater assemblies from the carbuilder website and was wondering if anyone is using them and has had good luck with them?

Doesn't look like there's room for a diverter at all and I'm thinking that I could get away with 3D printing my own valves for controlling flow. Does the lack of a diverter really hurt anything aside from taking longer to go from full heat to full A/C?

Tha Carbuilder unit looks pretty flat and compact. I don't know if it is any good or not. I am putting a Vintage Air Gen2 Mini in my MGB. The VA one has diverters built in. BTW, the one on Amazon is just the evaporator, not a full system. Frankly, I don't think either one will do any good in a Locost.

Haven't looked at the cores/boxes yet, but I've been looking at the 12V inverter A/C compressor units on aliexpress for my eventual creature comfort needs.
Needs a honking alternator and battery combo to pull off, but no direct crank connection required, which helps when shoving an engine where a trunk should be.

That is really expensive for an abs box with four holes, a fan, a heater core, and an evap core. I have the same unit but instead of port holes, a face plate with adjustable vents and controls. I think I paid $112 on ebay but that was a few years ago to install in a fully enclosed reverse trike. Didn't look at the bad amazon link but the carbuilder unit is from china too.

No significant loss running without a diverter. There are plenty of heater valves to choose from (I posted a list with pics years ago). You will need to provide a method to bypass if the donor did not use a heater valve (most don’t) to ensure adequate flow with the stat closed to prevent hot spots during warm up. It’s as simple as drill a small hole in the stat.

CORRECTION: I paid $135:

I completely agree on the expensive comment, the Chinese one on Amazon seems to be the exact same thing minus some fittings and a dryer, which is no issue to me. Planning on getting hoses made locally anyways.

Thanks for the info on the heat valves as well, I'll probably run either a cable operated 4 port bypass style one then. No reason to get super fancy on something that will eventually need to be replaced at some point when it fails.

Your AC and heating unit looks almost exactly like this one except with a set of vents rather than holes on the front.
