Front license plate mount/location

Post by tibimakai »

Who has a front license plate, where did you mount it and how?

That's a good question.
In Alberta we have no requirement for a front plate, so I've never really thought about it.
I searched the net for 7's with front plates, I found some pics but mostly with European style plates, long and narrow fastened to the lower chin of the nose.
I'm sure there are fellows here that have front plates and will post pics of them.

I'm in California as well, and although they require a front plate, I never had one. It wasn't that I didn't want it there; there simply was no place for it. About the only place I can think of where it might fit is hanging from a front upper A-arm.

In Europe they would put it on top of the nose, just above the grill. But with North American plates - Ugh!

It’s even worse when using the sleek low “catfish” nose that Kinetic sells… or sold.

I got busted by the cops for not having a front plate, so I mounted it under the nosecone, but folded back the bottom of the plate so that it did not hang down too low.

I think that the only place I can put it, is like the above picture. Thanks for that. I may install it on the bottom grill lip to be a bit higher.
I haven't checked the rear, but I may have issues there as well, since I have a 17" wheel as a spare. Not much room to install a plate.

Mine is book chassis, with a Curtis Unlimited "taller" Lotus nose. Just like the book, there is about 1-1/2" of frame hanging below the nose. I made a very simple flat bar plate mount.

My first plates were folded to fit better, but the RCMP can (and do) make a fuss about that, and I don't need the hassle, so I don't fold plates any more.

Great idea. Does not interfere with the nose when you are removing it?

There's a flat vertical area just under the grill opening on my (old) CMC nosecone. I mounted mine there on a cheap plate holder backed up with fender washers on the inside. Top is just about even with the grill opening, bottom is about 4 1/2" above the pavement - same as the sump clearance. I'll probably be twice as sorry if I bottom out but I haven't yet...

I will bring the plate's height as Mikep mentioned, but I will make a holder that mounts to the bottom of the nose cone at an angle.
An H bracket for the plate and two flat bars from it to the nose.
Thanks guys.

Here it is the front one, I have just finished. Tomorrow I will work on the rear one. No space on the car, because of the spare wheel. I will install it behind the spare wheel, roughly in the middle of the wheel using the two empty holes in the spare wheel.
I will have to do something with that chassis at the bottom, I need a spoiler or something there.
