weconway,
What did you keep that isn't shown in the pictures? Seats, wheels, rotors, calipers, etc? I haven't started parting out my donor yet. May wait until Spring to do that. Only the engine, ECU, engine wiring, transmission, rear axle, tires, driveshaft, seats and steering column will be kept from my donor. I'd like to make back my original $800.

Way to go!

Thanks!

SamM

Here's the list so far:

Engine (sans power steering and AC)
Exhaust header
Transmission
Differential and axles
Uprights and brakes
E-brake hardware
Wiring harness
ECU

Plus lots of little stuff (like eyeball vents for the heater, horn, etc.) I'm actually not keeping much of the donor.

I'm not keeping the seats or steering. I've decided to try and find vintage buckets or make my own. I'm going with an Appleton steering rack (for right now).

After selling off all these parts, I'm convinced the Miata is the way to go for a donor. It's more expensive up front, but parts are so easy to sell that you'll almost certainly make it back.

I broke even without the front fenders, bumper cover and hood...all valuable parts. And I still have quite a bit to go.

If you go with a +221 Gibbs type frame, Jack, at Kinetic is beginning to make nose and scuttle.

Give him a shout.

Santa came a little early this year.

Here's me rocking my new engine hoist, Hempy-style. Let the weight-related jokes begin!

Seriously, this is the manliest tool I own. It weighs hundreds of pounds and is assembled with bolts bigger than my biggest wrenches. I almost had to buy new tools to assemble it.

Yeah, I think the hoist might be able to handle the load, its the concrete slab under it that I'm worried about :P

Is it just me, or is your left foot on backward?

-dave

ps. Wow...I SOO recognize that carcass in the background. Dang...wish my garage had a background. It's all foreground. *sigh*

Man, you guys don't waste any time. I figured I'd test it since I weigh as much as a Mazda BP-ZE. Hopefully after the holiday season I can get down into the motorcycle engine realm.

No, my foot is on right (er, left?). I'm swinging in the wife's spot, so the garage looks much emptier than normal. After the hoist was together, I put my head down and cleaned the whole place up. There's no way to work in my half with crap all over the place.

I would recommend keeping the steering until yours is complete. Its not cheap to have to buy it back if you need it later.

I've been pretty busy lately. Last weekend I had an engine removal party. I finally got to put my hoist to good use! While I was at it, I also removed the wiring harness.

Image

As I was wrapping up last weekend's work, I realized that I was a lot closer to being done dissasembling the donor than I'd thought. I set a date for tomorrow for getting everything else off the car.

It's been a long day, but I now have a garage full of parts and an empty shell ready for its new home. One of the fellows I've sold parts to needs a couple of rear fenders, and I need the bare chassis gone. Seems like a good trade to me!

Congratulations on the successful removal of your engine! For my seven build, that was one of the most exciting days for me. I hope your excited too!
