No, the two are unrelated. If I have 100 lb/in springs or 1000 lb/in springs, I can still have the suspension designed for the above travel. One doesn't have anything to do with the other.

what I mean is that if it is a linear spring with 1 in droop, that is 1 g of force from the car sitting staticly, then wouldn't 4 in of total travel imply 4 g for a max load that will be exserted at the wheel?

also I changed the spring rate to 500 lb/in and it reduced the total wheel travel by .9 in

for the race setup the spring travels 1.61 in with the k=300lb/in

with the k=500 lb/in the spring travels .812 in. as you see above. the cam is slightly nonlinear which accounts for this data in my mind atleast.

thoughts?

no prob. i found it useful, hope somebody else does too. even if every shock has a +/-10% error the listing is a good starting point.

i've figured out which shocks in theory to use but where do i find more info on the specifics of inboard suspension? this thread is more general stuff. i'm looking for the finer points like angle of pushrod compared to shock, differences and effects of different bellcrank designs, formulas to figure wheel rate vs. spring rate vs. whatever else needs figured? i know there is a lot of stuff scattered about the forum but should we try to start a thread to specific technical details.
or what books? i know of the tune to win/drive to win/i want to win(ok i'm paraphrasing) series but they are all kind 20-30 years old. are they up to date with inboard design info and multi link IRS and such things? or is there maybe a definitive newer release that covers everything? like the suspension equivalent of the turbo bible, Corky Bell "Maximum Boost"?

ok now that i'm done sounding like a noob thats too lazy to use search i'll shut up and disapper back into 'chronic lurker' mode :leave:

But physics and geometry rules haven't changed, and since we aren't building F1 cars, all the old books work just fine. I recommend Staniforth's books starting Race and Rally Car Source Book, and it's sucessors. Smith's books are excellent but don't cover push-rod suspension in any detail. Get the Stainforth book(s).

i realize the really basics of it all are the same. i've read reviews that usually love the smith's books or say they're ok but dont cover some newer ideas like pushrod or IRS(not sure exactly what kinds IRS, i havent read them). i dont want to start burning my budget into a library when i have plenty left of things the car still needs. so i figured i's see what maybe more contemporary titles are suggested. i'll go see if i can find a copy of R + R source book right now.

thanks for the help

I have Road & Rally Source Book, and though it has some outstanding sections, much of the book is filler. Competition Car Suspension is the one to buy, I think.

thats really good to hear since thats i ordered CC Suspension instead of R&R Source Book. i read the reviews and amazon description and it seemed like CCS was a better option. it seemeed to cover a broader range of ideas/disiplines and listed a newish and updated 4th edition. RRSB seems like it was to be more specific to certain race type and no recent updated edtion. although when i start a library i'd be more than happy to read RRSB but not in the postion to do so quite yet.

Take a jog over to the FSAE sites for different ideas on inboard suspension. Its a bank of innovative ideas that you can encorperate into your own build.
