For sale is a 2007 Locost 7 powered by a Yamaha R1 Motorcycle engine. The car is based on a CMC frame that has been extensively modified for both safety and performance. The chassis has the dimensions of the original “book” Locost design. Below is a list of features on the car:

-2003 R1 Engine (160HP Fuel Injection)
-6-speed Sequential Gearbox (Bike Transmission)
-Toyota 10-Bolt Rear End with TRD Limited Slip (3.31:1 Gear)
-GAZ Coilovers and Eibach Springs
-Wilwood Calipers Front and Rear
-Twin Master Cylinders w/Cockpit Bias Adjuster
-Full Roll Cage
-Kirkey Race Seats and 5-Point Harnesses
-JAZ 8 gallon Custom Fuel Cell
-Two Sets of Wheels

This car was built by had over the course of several years. Both the front and rear suspensions were redesigned and built to work with the components used. The entire build was documented from start to finish here: http://www.underwood-racing.com/project_seven.htm The “Construction” tab has all the build details. You can also read about the development of the car and see videos of it in action.

The car was built to be a track/autocross car specifically, and is not street legal. It could be made that way with some additional lighting and wiring. It has been a great track car, and has competed in several time trial events in the Southeast, as well as participating in the very first Grassroots Motorsports Ultimate Track Car Challenge. It even earned the SPU class championship with the Tarheel Sports Car Club in 2008. It is fast, easy to drive, easy to maintain, and very easy on consumable parts.

Hey Jeff,

Good luck with the sale.
Not that I think you'll need much luck, the asking price is excellent for the potential buyer, especially considering how well executed the car is.

What's next?

Thanks, Moti.

I am looking to try a bit of drag racing, and am wanting to make some room and raise some funds to have a go at it.

Jeff, Great car, I've studied your site and watched your track videos over and over. Thanks so much for sharing all that on your website. That was some of the original inspiration for me that pushed me over the edge. really enjoyed the track footage. I wish others would spend the time to post things like that. Good luck with your next adventure. I'll forward the info on your Locost around to others. It is a fine build and appears to be in perfect condition, nice paint too.
I'm almost done with a 442 frame and am using many 92 miata parts, but with 2007 LSD, axles, 6-speed trans coupled with a 2010 Ford Duratec 2 liter engine. I will start placing the rear end next, then the engine and trans.
I really like the sound of your bike engine up on the pipes and those quick shifts. I'm afraid that sound would just get me in trouble on the street.
Cheers,

Great car and a great inspiration to my becoming involved in the locost community. If I wasn't already buried in my Europa and the parts needed for that project I would probably be sorting out how to bring your car home.

Anyone know of a good, reasonably priced way to get this thing cross-country? I'm located near Los Angeles and Jeff lives on the East Coast. Shipping in an open hauler (not ideal) seems to start about $1000. Renting a Uhaul/Ryder/Budget truck and trailer to tow it back runs about $1500-1600 for the distance (and 1-way dropoff).

The wife agreed to buying the car itself but these transport costs could kill the deal. Not to mention that I'd first need to fly out and actually drive the thing to make sure my 6'1" 215lbs actually fit in the driver's seat. Details.

I've thought of borrowing an SUV and driving out then buying a trailer out there, but costs will rival shipping.

So... is there something I'm missing? I'd love to buy this car if only I could get this figured out.

Thanks,
Aaron

Will you be registering it in CA? If not you will need the trailer to tote it to and from the track (or at least until it is registered).

You could probably buy a used trailer in VA, tow the car home, and sell the trailer in CA and come out ahead of a U-Haul rental.

U-Haul also rents the car hauler by the day with no mileage but you need a larger SUV/truck/van to tow it.

Train is usually cheapest. Other options include buying a second vehicle on the east coast to get the car home (tow dolly, flatdeck truck etc) then sell the truck locally where it will fetch more money (east coast re-sale is lower because of salt). Otherwise get it street legal and insured and drive it  Good summer adventure.

Cheers.

PS: Jeff, making it street legal might help it sell easier as well. Good Luck.

I plan to register whichever Locost I buy on the street here in CA. But until I can do that I'll have to trailer it around. I'd probably trailer it even when it's registered due to the distance to most tracks.

I have considered buying a used trailer and bringing it back.

What's the drive time from coast to coast? 4 days?

just a thought.. maybe the seller could trailer it 1/2 way? It means some of his time and gas $$, but it also results in a sold car for him.. I proposed this to a seller of an offroad buggy I bought years ago, and it's what made the deal happen- it was worth it then for both of us.. Just an idea..

No matter how it goes down, I 100% recommend buying/renting a book on tape-- it makes the hours and miles fly by.. I had one 'book' that got me from CA to New Mexico.. it was so good I hated getting out at the gas stops!

good luck with the deal- it's a beautiful car.. As a fellow 6'2'er, once your wife has given permission, you'll fit, whether you do or not
