Crossle 47S-Mazda 12 CSR, new Bodywork Project

Post by John Se »

Progress on my conversion
to this new body
Still need to do structure underneath that holds up the body and decide on Heat Exchanger set up, side intake duct or a top inlet duct. Any Ideas?

some Progress, this is my "final Precision Rough fit up stage" I am bouncing back and forth between building a new center from scratch (time consuming, lots of sanding) or using the sides from my New body, modifying and building a new cover over the front middle. I would say I am leaning toward the Use what I have as the best path to complete before racing season.

Looking good! My thought would be to use what you have and will be quickest/easiest to get the car ready for competition, then look at 'upgrading' it later with an all new piece if you so desire.

Couldnt quite use the existing center fiberglass pieces, made my self a new center from the nose to the front hoop and filler panels from the side of the chassis to the center. Expect to finish up this center section this weekend and get some better pics up.

The second pic is continuing work on the center cockpit cover, I hope to finish this up this weekend (did I say that before?)

As David Hobbs would say, "Looking decidedly racy!"
Well done, John! Keep after it, you're lookin' good there, close to a finished race car.

You can build the most awesome thing in the world but at some point, an 80yr old man in a crx is probably going kick your butt on the track... don't ask me how I know.

Hi John, did you build that body from scratch?
I would love to learn more as I think my next project is leaning strongly in this direction.
thanks,
Paul

The body work design is from Clark Lincoln created about 2001 and I think a dozen or so SCCA FC open wheelers were converted to DSR with Motorcycle engines using this body work, the body was from a terminated project of a FC Car and already cut up. I got it second hand but not ever mounted before the previous project was abandoned.

Clark is onto about design iteration 4 or 5 by now, and his skill is masterfull, nice looking designs are not easy.

Look for him at the D Sports Racer Forum

http://www.hurleyracingproducts.com/cus ... llery.html (look for LSR)

This has not been simple, for me, takes alot of time and fixturing to sneak up on all the measurements and the rebuilding of the under structure, and just the time for me to design so I dont screw up. But I am closer now, but lots to go. I cannot imagine the time to scratch build a body like Airframe Fixer. His fabrication skills are just A++, me always learning.

Clark Lincoln is an X-GM Designer so he really has a good eye for a pleasing design, If you notice some cars can turn out functional but kind of Frankenstein looking so the design element is not to be taken lightly. Makes the difference between a pleasing to look at design or something that just covers the engine and chassis.
