I set up torque pro on my tablet today, and once I had the protocol dialed in, it took 4-5 seconds from starting the truck to having gauges showing values. That's with a cheap Bluetooth ELM327 dongle and having the tablet in sleep mode and waking up to the torque dashboard screen.

Anybody tried replacing traditional gauges with a tablet?

Re: Anybody tried replacing traditional gauges with a tablet
I used a $35 Android tablet on my 1uz S14. I had it paired to a Megasquirt 2 with a bluetooth to serial adapter. I wasn't really happy with it. The app, MSdroid, I think it was called, worked well, but the battery drained after a half hour or so of driving and I would loose gauges. That sucked. It was always plugged in to a 12v outlet that was powered with ignition on. I guess the combo of the bright screen and the bluetooth was too much for the charger. Also, it took way too long to power on and connect to the megasquirt.
Another little quirk was the screen didn't get dark enough for night time driving. You could make custom gauge layouts in the app so I made one with a black background and you could swipe between them easily, so that worked out. Oh, and the version of the app that I had was free, so somehow, even without cell service, I would get pop ups while I was driving and they would cover the bottom of my garages. That's funny enough but would you believe me if I told you they were naked girl adds? Well, they were, and I have video proof.
Here's a video where you can get a good look at the dash. The dash part starts at 1:10, so skip to that if you are in a hurry.

Google customizes ads based on your preferences. So if you are always looking at car parts your ads show cars parts. Can't think why you would be getting naked girls.......

Re: Anybody tried replacing traditional gauges with a tablet
I grabbed an Amazon Fire tablet on Black Friday for $35 and mounted it where the radio used to go in my V8-swapped M3. I've played with RealDash, MSDroid, and ShadowDash. I typically use ShadowDash and some custom-made dashboards to keep an eye on oil pressure, coolant temp, fuel pressure, etc., the stuff I can't see on the physical gauges.

Because it's an Amazon tablet, getting the Google Play store on there is a little hacky and the tablet doesn't like Tasker or the other Android automation apps that would let me sleep/wake-up based on power. So I just turn the screen off when I get out. If the car has sat for a while, the tablet will be dead when I get in, but it doesn't take too long to boot and connect.
