Can you visibly tell a difference in frame sizes?

Whether it's a "book" chassis or another variant, FEA talk or roll cage advice that you're looking for, this is the place to talk frame construction.

Can you visibly tell a difference in frame sizes?

Post by stgdz »

Say you were to put a book, Gibbs and a 442e next to each other. Could you tell a difference between them when fully built? Been looking for a picture showing these things side by side.

The reason I ask is because I always thought these things were small but a local was building and driving his stalker and I was was quite surprised at how physically "large" it seemed.

An authentic Seven is truly tiny, and the typical changes to the design made by others are almost always making it quite a bit bigger. Now, if two variations happen to have approximately the same modifications, then it may not be noticeable - it all depends on what's being compared to what.

An original is 39" outside-to-outside at the chassis width.

The "Book Chassis" is 42"

Beyond that, they get big. A common biggie size is +4 (442 - 4" wider, 4" longer, 2" taller).

Yeah I stated the 442e because it's typically the largest.

There is this photo of the 7 and sv next to each other. The dv is locost book size from what I recall

It's my understanding that the Caterham S3(smaller of the 2), is still larger than the original 7, and the SV(larger of the 2), was about the size of the Gibbs(Haynes) frame.

The proportions of a locost vs a genuine 7 are just ‘not right’. Ron’s book chassis is pretty close and looks well proportioned. The Haynes roadster looks ‘off’ along with the other enlarged cars. I’m still building a haynes as there were plans available to convert to mx5 running gear. Nose cones etc are easier found for Ron’s chassis though. The car I’m building has a very similar track and wheel base to the mx5 it’s based on.

Agreed, some are not terribly proportionate. This one is getting close IMO :D...
