Nice stuff. Nice chain adjusters.

Very cool. There a a few former UofI FSAE people around here. I built the cars in 2004 and 2005.
Since then I built my MG Midget.

Welcome and look forward to seeing progress.

Hey, I'd recognize that engine anywhere! Any tips on the bare minimum to get it running? I'm just looking through the manual to figure out the electrical. My harness is damaged and I don't have all the external valves/servos/gadgets.

I have bought myself free from problems by buying a fully functioning motorcycle from which I have taken the engine, electrical system and all the sensor.
Andy Bates at AB Performance in England is the man you should talk to. He knows everything about the Honda CBR. Easiest way to get in touch with him is through his facebook page (messenger). https://www.facebook.com/abperformanceltd/
Hope it helps

Hey everybody. It's been a while since I've posted an update, had to take a step backwards to go forwards....

The rear subframe had to be rebuilt to fit the laser cut plates that house the differential. Was a pain in the ass to get the diff perfectly centered but it's finally complete. Also got the new sump on the engine. Was a nightmare getting the fitment correct, but after a few precision touchups with the dremel and a thread tap by my buddy jordan, everything is looking pretty sweet!

The car will have hand controls, maybe not even any pedals since I can't use them and who needs the extra weight lol, but still haven't decided.

Dump the pedals. They're just added complexity. Optimize the hand controls to suit yourself.

You could probably dispense with the steering wheel and run handlebars; clutch, throttle, and brakes (linked front and back) all right there. The car is light and you can run power steering if the effort is higher than you like.

The main downside would be that the steering ratio would have to be high for much lock when parking, but most modern production cars are in the go-kart category anyway, so you might not notice. Also you can play with a variable-ratio rack or linkage.

Or, if you're used to a particular system, just stay with what you know, assuming it's not horrible. I've seen some (1970s, come to think of it) Rube Goldberg collections of rods and levers that looked downright unsafe.

I got my motorcycle license when I was 13, and put 30,000 miles on before I got my learner's permit for a car at 16. You get used to controls working in a certain way. I'll never forget the expression on my Dad's face when I rolled up to that stop sign, pushed down on the clutch with my left foot, and squeezed the steering wheel with my right hand... fortunately there wasn't any cross traffic that time. Also, three years and 30,000 miles of working a hand clutch didn't help a bit when driving a pickup truck with a stick shift. Stupid leg, why do you keep stalling the engine?!

Great story TRX, but I have to ask.........when you and your dad did the debriefing/troubleshooting on why the car rolled through the intersection, what did you find? Was the steering wheel low on brake fluid

Hi Sorin,

Thanks for checking up on me. I am doing alright, just been a bit difficult to get work done on the car lately. Right now I am trying to fit the engine into the rear, but it doesn't quite fit when lined up with the diff.... I've got a plan to modify the chassis but it's not something I can easily do on my own. Hoping to post an update soon but here's a pic of where I'm at. Hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy.

-Ben

I originally wanted my engine centered but also I wanted the diff centered and same length axles. But I reluctantly moved the engine over to the right and the diff over to the left as I couldn't come up with a good way to offset the chain.

Like he says in the BEC book, it's all about the "C" word, compromise.

Luckily my frame was wide enough at the top to allow a couple inches of movement on the engine.

Hopefully it's just that upper tube you have to move/kink.

Looking good, keep it up.
