Really looking forward to seeing how this turns out - it has all the ingredients in the right quantities. Wishing you lots of luck with the inspection.

I have not seen mention of the ECU you will use, assuming it will be the factory one? If you are into playing with code and electronics you could check out a fellow Aussie who created the Speeduino ECU, otherwise just plug in what you have in hand and make life easy!

Thanks mate!

And I'm not sure what ECU I'll be going with, I can't use the stock one because I am deleting the distributors and running LS1 coils, and also to get the most out of the engine I'll need a tuneable ECU.

Speeduino is definitely one I've been looking at, as well as Megasquirt, but what I'd really like to get is a Haltech Elite 550. It's just the base model Elite ECU but has more than enough IO to run the 1UZ. I used to have one on my MX5 and it was flawless, and the fact it's waterproof will actually be really good for this application.

Thanks for the comment!

Well unfortunately I've lost access to the shed where the Jeep is stored, so I have a week to get all my tools and the car out of there. To that end, I've put the engine and gearbox into the car so it can all be stored on my car trailer.

Not ideal, but I'm aiming to have another place to work on the car by end of the year... hopefully sooner.

I've managed to organise my little single garage here in such a way that if I move everything out that's on wheels I still have access to a few tools.

I put my spare 1UZ engine on the stand and have ordered a full gasket kit, as well as a set of head studs and MLS gaskets.

Image

My reasoning for this is the engine in the car at the moment doesn't feel like it has compression on all cylinders as it's rotated. Not sure if it's stuck valves or something more serious, but I'll spend some time getting this spare engine buttoned up properly so when the time comes it's not a disaster if the original engine needs some work.

And if the original engine is fine then I may use this one to give the ole daily driver a bit more poke

Well, unless anything changes the car is now in storage until I manage to buy a house.

So... that was quick, just signed the contract on a house yesterday! In about 8 weeks I should be able to get cracking on finishing the build!

Well I've just moved into the new place a couple of days ago and have started getting the garage ready for the hot rod.

Image

First step was to paint the floor

It turned out pretty good for a DIY attempt and doesn't seem to scratch very easily. Next up is to enclose that rear wall, add some lights and power points (the place has 3-phase already!) and get the tools all in place.

What did you choose to paint the floor with? Is it an epoxy option?

Hi Kabuku6, I used Rust-Oleum's Rocksolid "Polycuramine" product (similar to an epoxy, it's a 2 part paint). I chose it because it cures within 24 hours and is suitable for DIY application. If I was having the floors done professionally I'd probably go for an epoxy of some sort.

I've been retrofitting my T8, four foot, fluorescent fixtures with the ballast bypass LED glass bulbs that are 18w and 5000k. Easy peazy, cheap, and very bright. Around $55 for 10 here.

I'm using corded utility four foot double tube leds in the basement. I place switched, gfci outlets between the lights to double the spacing provided by the cords then secure the cords to the joists with hangers.

Good work! Debating if/how I want to paint my shop floor... it's only 2000sqft.

And a +1 on the ballast free LED conversion. I've done that in my shop and restaurant kitchen.

That sounds interesting, I didn't realise you could get replacement tubes that are LED. I'll check out what's more effective - LED battens or retrofitted T8's. Currently there is just one double 4ft T8 which I want to remove anyway, so it will all be new stuff.

Sadly in Australia it's illegal to touch the wiring in our own homes unless you're a licenced electrician. Everything must be done by them and signed off with a certificate, otherwise we aren't covered by any insurance. Technically we aren't even allowed to wire a new plug onto an appliance! I'll put the lights in place and call in an electrician to wire in new sockets, lights and circuit breakers (currently the place has ceramic fuses, they'll need to be swapped out).

2000 sqft. is going to be a much bigger job to paint than my ~300sqft. Good luck!

The led fixtures are flimsy. Retrofitting an older fixture is much better and cheaper. Look for take out fixtures for sale or free with bad ballasts. The leds typically have a dummy connection on one end just for support. No need for new wire.

Put LEDs in the 3 T8s in my garage, 1 in the laundry room & 1 master closet. Huge improvement.

Still would like more garage lighting, may look into adding 3 more in there, maybe 6, though the last 3 would be 'blocked' with the garage door open.
