Hi folks,

Is anyone familiar with Bugpack windshield rubber and how it works? What size tubing it works with? Do you have a cross-section picture of the stuff?

This caught my interest so I did some searching.

Pic is from http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Windshield ... p/6049.htm

https://www.doghouserepair.com/store/it ... l-bugpack/
mentions using an adhesive.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=468547
gives a quick discussion and from DWP who apparently is familiar with product

"There is no "frame"
The rubber fits inside the roll bar, you can glue or screw in place.
The windshield glass goes in a groove in the rubber just like a standard windshield frame.
DWP"

Can't find mention of tubing sizes but buggy sizes seem similar in size to what I have seen on here. Quick call would probably sort it out.

Most way down shows the windshield and looks like they used similar rubber to the buggy stuff.

Thanks for the research maxbob. That picture halfway down the page shows it pretty well. Looks like this'll work for me with a full cage in my locost.

Bill,

in your photo, there is a steel strip spot welded inside the frame and a traditional S gasket is being used.

The glass will need a large radius around the top to match the roll bar and use a single piece of gasket material for the inverted U. The bottom will be it's own piece and the gasket won't work so well on the cowl.

Different vendors use their own version of the part number, but it is universally 6049.

Thanks Miata8,

The drawing really explains how this stuff works. Have you had any experience with it? Does it work well? Or is the S gasket and steel strip a better set up?

I don't have any experience with it, but I have experience with other types.

Here is a common type with integral locking strip versus a chord to hold it tight. Basically the same as older pickup truck rear window gaskets and commonly used on boats. Fiberglass, sheetmetal, or steel strip can be used as a frame. The one circled is the one I chose for .250" laminated glass in a fiberglass frame but I won't really know until I get close to that point. Glue-in glass with mastic edging is much more aero which is important for my low powered application.

As a heads-up: back in 2011 I decided I'd use the Bugpack 6049 sandrail gasket for my build, using the front roll hoop as the windshield frame.

Earlier tonight I went looking to double-check tube diameter and found that the four vendors I'd bookmarked were showing "out of stock - no back order" or "no longer available." Apparently Bugpack got bought by EMPI, and EMPI's web site doesn't seem to know anything about a part number 6049.

I found a couple of comments that the gasket had been discontinued. I guess I need to call EMPI and see if it's discontinued or they're just sold out until they make some more.

Supposedly other companies make similar gaskets, all using the same 6049 number to identify them, but I haven't come across any yet.

I don't know if this is the same but it "appears" to be in stock. At least it will let me put it in a shopping cart.

I've found a handful of places that still have some. Note the "BP" in the BP6049 part number; I'm wondering if it all came from Bugpack no matter who supposedly made it.

I could probably buy an extra roll just for CYA and move on.

It looks like Bugpack 6049 is back on the market again. Price is about the same as before.

From https://www.doghouserepair.com/store/it ... acks-6049/ :

Part number: B6-0490-0
Your cost: $29.95
Description:
This is the cool windshield rubber that has a radius on the outside side to fit a range of tubing sizes and a slot on the inside to fit up to a 1/4" windshield.
Allows mounting of a windshield on tube frame buggy's and sand rails.
It comes 12' long
What the instruction in the picture means: if your frame opening is 48", your windshield must be larger than 48" to prevent the glass from simply falling into your lap.

That answered my part of my question about tube sizes - it's flexible. But I still haven't found something like "minimum and maximum tube sizes."

Just found this thread. Looks like super useful stuff. For sure going to use this for my car. Just curious though, how is this seal attached to the tubes?

Edit: Nevermind, glued or screwed on.

Based only on the cross-sectional drawing, I'd guess rivets and/or weatherstrip adhesive.

The only potential downside, other than possibly looks, is that if the car spins at speed, air pressure could push the glass out the front.

Eh, I wouldn't worry about it. Looks like the glass would need to be roped in. My semi truck windshield is roped in and I go over some pretty shitty roads and never had an issue. I could see in an accident it may pop out but I'd think it'd probably break before it came out.

Okay, buckaroo, what does "roped in" mean in this context?

Context can mean a lot. I had a childhood friend who told me (thirty years after we'd met) that she'd asked a cowboy she was dating if he'd ever tied a woman up, and he hadn't, and she said it might be interesting, and he went out to his truck and came back with a bit of rope between his teeth...and eight seconds later she was lying on her side with both wrists and one ankle tied together. He said something along the lines of, "That was fun. What else do you want to do?"

Am I the only one that wants to know if you've spun your semi?
