I know some people run wires inside the chassis, but it's hard to prevent vibration-induced abrasion and potential shorts.

The wires in mine go through a small hole at the top of the light, down through the roll bar itself, through a hole in the bottom of the left roll bar mount plate, and into the trunk area, where it connects (2-pin connector) into the brake light wiring. I can unbolt the roll bar, lift it off, disconnect the connector, and separate the whole thing from the car without cutting the wires.

Time to select a high-mount third brake light strip and fix mounting brackets to the roll bar. Some great suggestions in this thread, but unfortunately the pictures aren't available anymore.

I'd like to find a unit that won't look too bulky mounted behind or under a 1.5" OD rollbar. Brightness and visibility are the main objectives and of course there's the added aero drag with an undermount :roll:

Also trying to avoid drilling holes in the rollbar, so weld-on brackets and wire routing is anticipated.

Suggestions, experiences and installed pictures would be helpful :)

I'd use a third brake light designed to mount in a spoiler.

Could also go picking in the junkyard for one you like.

Should be easy enough to fab the tabs/bwakkits/thingamajiggers. :cheers:

I started out with a generic eBay (from China) light. I welded a pair of brackets to the roll bar and drilled a hole to run the wiring. I really liked the installation but it was sadly weak in light output, especially in sunlight and very directional vertically. Even the top didn't provide enough shadowing. I soon switched to a less sexy, but more safe LED trailer light that met DOT requirements. The output was sooooo much better. I'm not saying that you can't get satisfactory performance with an eBay thin light. I will say that you may be taking chances and may have to buy several to find "the one" that is satisfactory. Like most everything else on a Locost, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I used this stop/turn/tail light for the 3rd brake light on my project car:

I'm only hooking up the ground and the "stop" wire, since it doesn't need to be lit as a tail light.

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions all. I ended up getting one of these:

My front turn signals also came from this store so had some positive experience with their products.

In addition to a very bright brake light it can provide tail lights and sequentially flashing turn signals. Don't know how much of this function I will implement.

May also add a strobe effect module to the brake light. Something like this: http://www.3rdbrakeflasher.com/brake-li ... p-181.html

May not be perfectly legal but should get folks attention. :twisted:

They tried out something similar on taxis in San Francisco years ago. I liked them. The 3rd brake light would flash more in response to more pedal pressure from the driver. It was a DOT program run in several major cities. In the end they disallowed them. I don't know why.

I believe they were disallowed because flashing lights are only allowed on emergency vehicles or hazards (slow moving or stopped vehicle with emergency flashers on).
The flickering brake light conversions do grab your attention, but after the 15th time they go off in heavy traffic, I for one am ready to drive into them just to stop the damn flashing... :zoom: :oops:
