What kinds of fuel pumps are people running for electronic fuel injection and how do you like them?

Hi Jerry,
I'm using a Bosch inline pump. Kind of hard to get to at the moment so I can't tell you the model #. Letme know if you want the model#.

Cheers!

Frame mounted pump from an early 90's F150. Cheap from Pick-n-Pull.

I used the in-tank one from my donor. What is better matched to the engine than that? In my case, I also used the donor's dropping resistor that reduced the output from the pump under low loads, just like the donor did. It adds life to the pump.

Jerry,

I checked the # on mine and it is the 4400 just like this one. Seller is based in China but the product ships from Seattle.
You don't have to pay $200 for this item.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/224363149972?_ ... 2%26sd%3D3

I bought mine a few years ago from Mark in Chicago. He was building a Lotus 11 and had one surplus. He was used an Ecosport engine also.

Good luck!

An oem type in-tank pump is the best compromise for noise, cost, mx access, potential system compatibility problems (pressure and volume), and safety.

Pumps need a pre-filter and will be damaged if run dry due to a pickup that doesn't flow as well as the pump.

Inline oem pumps typically have a low pressure pump from a traditional unbaffled tank feeding a small tank that feeds the high pressure pump to prevent it from running dry. The small tank also receives full returning from the fuel rail and often have a filter.

An in tank pump eliminates the extra complexity however an inline pump very close to the tank with a gravity feed (tank side or bottom outlet) with a large surface area prefilter pickup inside and 1/2 inch tank fitting and hose to neck down to the pump fitting of course) should be ok.

Higher output volume than necessary is a bad idea. It increases return flow, aerates and heats the fuel, and can be too much for the return capacity causing excess pressure at low rpm.

Will it work if you don't do all these things? Sure. Your mileage may vary.

I bought a cheap diesel lift pump for an EFI build.
The fuel filter I got has a built in pressure regulator.

From my project notes:
Knockoff bosch 69136 7.3L diesel lift pump: $23.49
MANN WK69/2 4.0bar fuel filter: $27.95

EDIT: Ebay links.

I am using a cheap E2000 external fuel pump. uses 5/16 lines that match the miata fuel line size. the fuel pump is used on V8 engines so it flows enough and the PSI is more than enough for my little miata engine. I may upgrade once I turbo the car, but for now, cant beat hte cheap price. I know many think external pumps are noisy, but I cant hear it over the exhaust at idle. I can hear it when it primes the engine before starting, but I like that I can hear this so I know its working.

When I bought mine it was $37.99.

External pumps are often not plumbed or mounted well and that will affect the noise levels.

EFI pumps work best with a flooded inlet and a larger suction hose than the output.
The pump inlet needs to remain flooded even during high G events.
Air in the fuel supply for EFI is a big issue.
Always include a return line to help bleed off any air and cool the fuel rail.

Buy Walbro pumps from a reputable dealer, there are knock-offs with questionable reliability on the webz.
Probably the same for Bosch.

I've got an 044 knock off pump for my CBR1000RR BEC. There's a check valve on the output side. What's that for, is it necessary? The pump will be mounted in a surge tank.

After engine shutdown, the check valve is supposed to keep the fuel system up to the injectors and regulator full of fuel, preventing drain back to the tank through the pump itself. This way, the entire fuel system does not have to be filled and fully pressurized before the engine will run. The engine usually must be spinning the entire time to keep the pump on.

These check valves are known to eventually leak enough to delay starting but the pump is still fine. To minimize crank time before starting, a momentary switch to control the pump relay can be used to prime the system to operating pressure before cranking instead of replacing a pump for a bad check valve.

To add to MV8's suggestion on the fuel pump switch. Look at a 3 position switch. That will allow you to cut current to the pump. A good anti-thief, but I also use it to crank the engine after it's be setting during the off season, until I see oil pressure, before starting engine.
