Hi Kristian-
Good to hear from you, and to see the little orange beastie out on the road again. Interesting car show... I like the small, local shows where you get to meet "neighbors" that are into cars. That Nash Metropolitan looked good, didn't it? MGA engine... And what's with the "Fargo" on the tailgate of the Dodge? (Is that your partner in the chipper?)

PS- Tell the kids that Uncle Bubba says "Howdy!"

Glad you had fun. That's pretty amazing that those cars at the show are still going, and look so good. The scary part is I remember looking at some of those cars in showrooms when they were new.

That Buick looks like '56. We shipped a brand new '56 Century to Europe and drove it there for several years. I could tell you some very funny stories about our adventures with it.

Cheers,

Thanks guys, it's good to have it on the road again. I almost forgot how much fun it is to drive. I also forgot how uncomfortable it is for long distances. I drove over 300km in it today, and my daughter came along for the ride too. We're staying at my in-laws house because we're helping out with a square dance festival they're organizing. It looked like rain last night, so I backed into the garage for the night, perfect fit. Might need heavier springs to haul it though.

Pulled out onto the highway behind a Polaris Slingshot. Ended up following them for an hour or so, caught him checking out my car in the mirror a couple times.

When my daughter saw the GoPro mount on the helmet, she insisted that I out the camera on. Not sure how long it was recording for, but might be something interesting on there.

JD, the Fargo isn't actually a Dodge, it's a Fargo. It's a Canadian truck, along the lines of some Mercury and Pontiac vehicles that were only sold in Canada. A buddy in highschool had one just like the picture, except the paint job wasn't quite as nice. He was broke, and used house paint and a brush.
Cruising around Europe in the Buick must have been a bit of an adventure, not many vehicles over there that big, and the roads reflect that. One of my uncle's in Norway used to have an Olds Toronado with a 455, I think a 1967. I know it was the second year of production at least, and he had the only one in Norway.

Yes, and I'm old enough to have worked on them, many years ago we coined the the phrase "can a Fargo go far?", they rode like a hay wagon, in the summer you had to open the windows to let the dust out when cruising the country roads, and in the winter the heater struggled to put out some heat, the windows frosted over, but by gum the truck got you to where you wanted to go. BTW the poor heater made the girl friend snuggle a little closer to keep warm, good times. :D

Back in the late seventies when I had hair, I bought a 1956 Chrysler New Yorker that toured Europe for ~90,000 miles, then came back to Canada. I bought it off a biker chick for $75, she had removed the back seat, cut out the x members to the trunk, and put in a double size mattress, her name was Springer, again it was good times. Now I have no hair, but it was worth it.

I bet a lot of people would. Sort of like a circus act I'm guessing. I did find a YouTube video a couple years ago or so about a car set up that way though. It looked like probably around the 1960's or so. It had the hitch on the roof of the car, and the car could completely turn around while hooked to the travel trailer. Looked pretty slick as far as manuverability goes. My dad new if a guy that did something similar with a new Ford pickup. Cut out the back of the cab and front of the box, then sheeted it in with plywood so he had a place to sleep. This was a brand new truck in the 2000's. Apparently someone told the guy he couldn't cut up a brand new truck like that, his response was that it was his and he could do whatever he wanted to it.

I had to look that one up. Seems that Fargo is most recently a Canadian marketing name of Dodge trucks, not unlike Mercury and Ford models that were virtually identical. Only the nameplate changed. The Chrysler/Fargo connections go back to the 1920's.

https://www.allpar.com/old/fargo.html

Quote:
Not until the 1960s did Chrysler start to market Dodge and Fargo trucks together in Canada, and by this time the model names were the same; most cosmetic differences had been dropped. The two shared the same magazine ads which referred to them as "Dodge-Fargo" trucks.

Quote:
By the mid-1970s, the Dodge and Fargo trucks themselves had no differences except for the nameplates. After 1971, even the hubcaps and horn buttons with the new Dodge Tri-Star emblem were used by Fargo! Every model that was offered by Dodge was offered by Fargo with the same model names or numerical designations, including the new compact van seriers. One minor difference appeared on the flat-nosed Transline pickup that was derived from the compact van. Fargo volume was not considered to be enough to create dies to stamp its name onto the Transline's tailgate. A decal would have to do, with "Fargo" printed out in the same new graphic letter style that was now becoming famous on the sides of Plymouth and Dodge racing cars.

Interesting info I had never known about.

Here's an article about some of the Canadian Pontiac's too if anyone is interested. Doesn't go j to a whole bunch of detail about which car models were only available in Canada, but still an interesting read.

Still on the theme of Canadian oddballs, I was at another car show today and saw one or two. First up, a Chevy 1300 pickup, according to the owner, the only difference is that it's not a 3100.

Here a Pontiac Acadian, pretty sure they were another Canadian only model.

I think Mercury Meteors were Canada only as well.

Here's a Monarch Sceptre, another Canadian model.

This pickup was parked next to me for most of the show, quite the difference in ride height. People that knew the truck thought it looked bigger than usual, I'm guessing that might have something to do with being parked beside my car.
Attachment:
IMG_20190713_120139_200-1600x1200.jpg

I even had time the night before the show to make myself another 7 shirt, no point wearing just a plain one at a car show.

And I'm finally able to post again, had a hell of a time getting pictures to upload. Lately I get told to log in when I try to post, and when I do my post is gone.

More car show pics if I'm able to post them. I probably could have at least cleaned the bugs off my grill, but it shows that I've been driving it. A few people mentioned that it looks like it gets driven.

This one was much shinier. Probably part of why it got best in show. It was a cool car for sure, and at least it wasn't small block Chevy powered.

Some more cool stuff from the car show. This Dodge panel truck was a local dairy delivery truck and was put out to pasture until the current owner brought it back to life. This is the first time he's shown it, and it's only been on the road for a month. Interesting character, and I spent a fair bit of time talking to him. One of the little girls in the old pictures is now married to a guy that had a 57 Suburban in the show. Another lady at the show recognized the sign painter's signature on the door as her uncle's, apparently he was the local sign painter back in the day. Definitely a cool piece of local history.

There were a couple really nice Corvairs at the show too. I asked my son what he thought this one had in the trunk. He was real surprised when he looked at it. An hour or more when we got to the red one, he recognized it as a Corvairs, and knew it was going to be rear engined as well. Not bad for a little kid, sometimes it's pretty surprising the details that he notices.

There was a really cool Valiant that still had the slant 6 in it too. With a huge turbo. Apparently it's built to the hilt with custom pistons and lots of other cool goodies.

This old truck actually still gets used as a truck according to the owner. He said people are real surprised that he actually uses it and it isn't just a show truck. The inside of the box definitely shows normal wear and tear. Still has the original flathead V8, but he adapted a T5 to it so he can actually drive it on the highway. Pretty cool to see in a sea of Chevy powered Ford hotrods.

Don't see too many Studebaker trucks around anymore.

I had fun telling him about how the model T was built before controls on cars were standardized, and they don't have a gas pedal or a normal transmission. The guy that owns it fired it up for us and explained how everything works, pretty cool of him. And apparently 1915 was the first year for electric headlights to, run from the magneto.

The old Packard was pretty cool too.

With all the errands and running around I did the last few days I ended up putting almost 700km on my locost in the last few days. Not bad considering I was thinking of selling it the last couple years because I never really use it. Had fun letting kids sit in the car at the car show, even fired it up and revved it a few times for some of them. Kids and parents liked that I think.

An occasional Pontiac trivia item in the States. I thought many of them looked better than the southern GM models.

The Monarch was completely new to me, though. My first thought was that it reminded me of an Edsel. The Wikipedia page says:

Quote:
The Monarch line of vehicles was dropped for 1958 when the Edsel was introduced, but the poor acceptance of the Edsel led Ford to reintroduce Monarch for 1959. With a drop in medium-priced vehicle sales in the early 1960s, and the introduction of the similarly priced Ford Galaxie, the Monarch brand was dropped after the 1961 model year, with approximately 95,450 cars built in 15 years.

Looks like Canadians weren't impressed with the brand; Ford sold 733,700 Galaxies in 1959 alone...

Following up on a Galaxie link, I found that the ones sold in Australia came from Ford of Canada (probably some Commonwealth trade advantage) but the '59-early '63 models used a Fairlane dashboard and the late '63 and '64 models used '59 Edsel dashboards. The mind, she boggle. Somewhere, there were enough right hand drive, four-year-old Edsel dashboards squirreled away to rework them to fit a completely different car...

Wow, great pictures! And even better "history lesson" about Canadian cars/trucks. Cool stuff, and I wasn't aware of almost all of it.

I love this forum!!!

I'll be honest, I'd never heard of a Monarch either and had to look them up. And I didn't realize there was anything special about the Chevy 1300 pickup until I talked to the owner for a bit. It's fun letting kids hop in the car, they love it. I figure car shows are probably boring for kids, might as well let them have some fun. We came back to my car at one point in the day and there was a kid probably 9 or 10 standing there by himself looking at my car. My boy is 7, and he walked right up and started climbing in. The other kid told him he wasn't supposed to touch the cars. I thanked him and said it was mine, told him he could climb in too if he wanted. There were a surprising number of people that recognized it and knew what a Lotus 7 was, even one guy that had bought the book and started building a Subaru powered one quite a while ago. He gave it away after not finishing it, but said he still has the book and his son asked him as soon as they saw mine if he could build one like it. So that was pretty cool, hopefully he does build one. Tons of people ask what engine it's got too, and I don't think anyone has ever guessed what it is. Had a couple older guys say that my car is what hot rodding was all about back in the day, cruising junkyards and souping up or building whatever you could to go faster, not cutting a massive check for someone else to build a shiny car just like everyone else had. I took that as a big compliment.
