It’s a long and frustrating story, but the short version is that I’ve been struggling endlessly with acquiring the shocks I want. I’ve been itching to drive the car so I built some rods to lock the suspension for now.

This morning she went for her maiden voyage. My intention was to drive around the block once or twice. Turned into about 45 minutes of being flagged down to answer questions by a few folks and giving rides to curious neighbors. Lots of smiles and waves all around. To say it was well received is an understatement.

The car was amazingly civilized. Steering was ‘two-finger’ light even with 7 degrees of caster. It rode firmly, but not nearly as bad as I was expecting. Super pleasant to just cruise around in, effortless and almost sedate. The only issues that surfaced was the need to adjust the spacing of my pedals, the rear master cylinder needs to be larger (front and clutch are just right), and one small water dribble at the expansion tank upper plug. All easy fixes.

Congratulations on your first drive!

One of the two big milestones, well done.

Yes, congratulations, Ron.

I'm surprised it didn't give you a good thrashing with solid bars for shock absorbers. That seat foam must be very stiff [LOL].

Cheers,

After 9 months, 4 failed orders, and much aggravation my AS2's finally arrived. Digressive piston, but otherwise valve-less, gas-less and oil-less.

Had some time to weigh the car tonight. As it sits in the pictures shown a couple posts back, including about 4 gallons of fuel aboard, total weight is 1223lbs with a 47/53 F/R distribution. With my oversized butt in the seat, bias is about 42/58 F/R. I had projected a final weight of ~1350lbs - it’s looking like it should finish up closer to 1300lbs. Not as featherweight as some of the builds here but expected with 18ga steel floors/rear bulkhead/firewall and tunnel, a compromise I was willing to live with for the intended purpose of the car.

We seem to be back. Unfortunate that we've lost so many photos.

The car is sprung now and I've finished installing the dash switches/buttons/knobs. Gave it a coat of finely textured paint. Difficult to capture in photos but looks nice in person.

Can you reach all the switches when belted in?

Looks really sharp!

I like your steering wheel. Now that I'm on the road, I'd like to upgrade mine. Maybe a winter project.

While you're answering this, what are those switches, lights, hazards, horn....what are the other two, wipers and fan?

Easily, comfortably, and with a bent elbow ;) My dash is something like 4" farther back than a typical book build.

Thanks Trochu. From left to right: turn signals, horn, gauge dimmer, master/start, lights (running and headlights simultaneously), high/low beam, and hazards. No intention of a heater or wipers - strictly a fair weather toy.

I had the sides and rear skins laser cut, but haven't gotten around to forming them yet. Decided to pick up a 3D printer and give it a try. Since I knew there would be a learning curve I figured I'd get started now so that by the time I actually need parts I'll (hopefully) be ready. So here's a first attempt at tail lights. They aren't the final version, just gave me a starting point to get a feel for the process and limitations. With some refinement, this seems doable.

RTz, your build is looking great! What paint did you use on the dash?
