He could take 6 months off and still beat most builders!

But it's not done, so don't count chickens yet...

Made it out to the shop this afternoon. Secured the scuttle aluminum with some SS rivets. Had to dimple the aluminum in an area where the windshield wiper arm would have hit it. These arms like most 70's and 80's arms have a slider that locks the arm off the windshield so that you don't fight spring tension to remove it from the pivot shaft spline. The windshield washer 'squirter' takes the place of one rivet. Some descripted pics

Out to the shop for a bit this afternoon. Made construction paper pattern, transferred to aluminum, cut out aluminum, and test fit on 7. Some pics.

Looks like we were working on the same thing today. You cut some out of the upper corners to make it easier to bend too I see. You making the rivets visible or do you hide them?

Top will be rolled over the 3/4" tube, the bottom will be bent under and riveted. Will apply adhesive to the 3/4" sq tube uprights on final assembly. There will be no visible rivets on this piece.

Had to do some work to the water well this morning meaning installing a new upper leather so that water doesn't spill over whilst pumping up to pressure.

Then I made it out to the shop. Fitted the arse end aluminum about a dozen times before I was happy to nail it down. Been there done that, some pics.

Used some Gorilla glue to attach the sheet to the 3/4" uprights, some pics.

Then I decided to change up this build a bit. I wanted to put some recessed pop rivets across the top 3/4" round tube to secure the massaged aluminum. I didn't have any recessed pop rivets on hand so decided to make some. Made an anvil be drilling 1/8" hole then used a 17/64" bit to achieve the bevel and diameter of the SS pop rivet head. I then machined a punch to fit over the rivet mandrel to be able to punch the rivet into the anvil. End result = Some descripted pics.

The rear ally looks excellent. Congrats on the recessed pop rivets - very nice.

Are you doing polished ally, or paint on this one?

Cheers,

Looks great. But then you've had a lot of practice. I can't quite figure out the pop rivet tapered punch. I would have thought that a flat bottomed punch would have done the job. For my build, I continued the wrap around just enough to have the pop rivets past the horizontal tangent so they wouldn't be above the top of the wrap.

Perry, I bought some counter sink rivets and was very disappointed in the quality. Yours look really good. Never thought about making them. Well done Sir!

Cheers!

Hey Lonnie, this one will be polished body with painted fenders and nose cone.

I've done that also Chuck but I wasn't happy with the 'spring back' when shaping the aluminum around the tube. The way I build the top 'wrap' is the last thing I do so I can't remove the aluminum to tighten up the top wrap. To clarify the rivet, I made a bunch of them on my anvil with the punch, then I drill my 1/8" holes and bevel them with the 17/64" drill then pop rivet with the recessed rivets. This approach seemed to tighten up the top wrap

Thanks Larry, there's always something to learn on each build.

Out to the shop this afternoon, grabbed the construction paper and made a side panel pattern on the DS. Reversed it and low and behold! it fit the PS! Made my day. Transferred pattern to the aluminum sheet and started cutting and trimming. Couple of pics

Slow day today, managed to get out to the shop after lunch. Completed trimming the side panels. Bevelled the opening around the UCA and LCA cut outs and the exhaust opening. Also formed a 1/4" bevel on the top edge that will form over the top rail, this keeps the aluminum edge nice and close to the steel rail when riveted. Pre-drilled the rivet holes for the bottom rail, and removed the swarf. Clamped the sheet(s) to the table and formed the bottom 90*. Still have to make the front panels that blend into the front cut outs and the steering rack on each side. Some pics

Well other than picking up some SS pop rivets tomorrow, this build is getting put on the back burner.

Took the old pump house off the water well. The new pump house will have a 2100 gal poly water tank in it. I will be hauling city water to keep it full and the water well is going to be on standby.

Crew was out yesterday morning, levelled the ground, built the 16' x 12' box form, and poured the concrete.

This morning they were back to remove the forms and back slope the pad. Will start construction this coming weekend (doing this by myself). Here's some interesting info - last year I bought 45 sheets of pressure treated 3/8" plywood for $20.50CAN/sheet. Today I priced out the same sheets from the same supplier, todays price per sheet is $68.99CAN/sheet :ack: thanks to COVID they say.

Couple of rain days so I was able to work on the 7. Fitted, formed, drilled, cleco'd, and riveted the side panels. Leaving the white protective plastic on for now. Some descripted pics.

The boy has the fenders and nose in white primer. Will most likely shoot the paint in a day or two.
