Nice thing about calcium deposits in a water heater is that it will never rust. Mine is 25 years old. My maytag washer and dryer are 45.

Where does the calcium (and presumably some iron, magnesium etc) go in that system?

I grew up a half days drive north of Perry, in Vermilion- which was so named for the red iron colour of the water.. and may look to head out somewhere like that when I retire, so I am all ears for new technology that makes life better out there.

It doesn't stick to itself and the plumbing and passes through so if you drink it, no need for vitamins!(I joke). It also helps to remove existing buildup. You wrap the outside of the pipes a specific way and number of turns to create the field. I chose this unit in part because it uses the most amps which should make for a stronger field. I also have a large salt type automatic softener that I don't use anymore and was considering adding city water before I installed the electronic softener.

Yesterday, my moms water heater split from corrosion due to the city water and lack of service (anode replacement and flushing). It is 14 years old in a crawl space and a shorty 38 gallon. I dug out the area to fit a standard 50 gallon rheem. Also had PB grey pipe (banned in 1995) that was in good shape but I had to adapt to pex for the changes.

Well, this is not an update towards building the 7. I'm taking some time off from building because truth be told, I'm bored of building 7's right now. I will most likely continue on the build in the fall if we don't go south this winter. Like the saying goes a change is as good as a rest, so I bought myself a 1980 XS400 Yamaha which I'm presently tearing down and am going to do a ground up build into a Bobber. I've joined and will be posting my build on http://www.xs400.com/ under the username Buddha.
I still read this site every day, and chime in when I can talk rubbish so don't write me off completely

I believe they opened the USA/Canada border this morning, Perry. At least that's true for Ontario. I assume it's true everywhere (B.C.?), but don't know for sure.

Remember, those motorcycles fall over if you don't put your feet down when you stop. Maybe not if you're a Cirque du Soleil performer, eh?

Cheers,

From what I read, casual visiting is still not permitted. My son and family live in Sault Ste Marie MI. According to the Canadar website, they cannot cross the border for shopping.

Bike looks to be in decent shape.
I've got a neighbor that has an XS400 that he's been getting running properly, but in stock form. I think it's his 3rd or 4th restoration project.
Started with a Yamaha 650cc cruiser, did a Valkyrie & now the XS. His DD is a Ducati Monster that he found for a sweetheart of a deal.

Thanks JAM, I also have my eye out for a basket case Yam 650, that way I could build his and hers Bobbers :headbang:

Hey Josh, for this build I used Princess Auto steel trailer fenders. Had to buy 3 for the rear fenders cause I had to lengthen each side 11”. The fronts had to be shortened, can’t remember how much.

I bought some today, thought I'd see what they looked like. They don't look great. Got 31" fenders tip to tip and the dia. of my tire is around 25". With an inch of clearance, I need to take about 2.5" off either side (well, less, as I'd shorten them for the fronts as well). Did yours fit ok or did you have to change the radius? If you changed the radius, mind telling me how you did it as yours look great. Think the metal may be a bit thick for my manual shrinker and cutting a bunch of slits and rewelding, althought would work, sounds trick to do while maintaining an even arc.

How's the bike coming? Getting it done just in time for winter?

Hey Josh, so my tires are P205/75R15 and are ~26" dia. On the rear my fender has about 2" fender/tire clearance to allow for shock travel. I did not need to change the radius of the fenders. The pic is deceiving but there is 2" clearance around the entire fender to tire, a look I've decided to live with. I can't offer any advice on trying to tighten up the curve on these fenders.

As for the '78 bike I still have a bit more work on it, then on to the second XS400. They will be nearly identical in appearance except the '80 has a 16" rear wheel with a drum brake.

Hi Perry,

Good idea to mix up the projects, will be a cool bike when done. Motorbikes are the most fun you can have right up to the point of impact.

I have some fond memories of kicking over my sisters XS400SP when I was a teenager, combination of cold mornings, bad battery and poor tuning resulted in lots of leg days. If only I knew then what I know now, but that applies to lots of things. :BH:
