I'll give them a look next time. Maybe their shipping isn't as silly as McMaster.

Alright, some forward progress. I built a chassis cart a while back so that I can do MIG welding and plasma cutting as too much flammable stuff indoors for that and finally got the leveling standoffs finished this week. Made a couple different varieties, some individual pieces and a pair of crossbar mounts all of which can be leveled. Yesterday a few friends came over and we moved the Beetle from the indoor table to the outdoor cart, and the Locost from the sawhorses it had been sitting on to the indoor table.

Next up for the Locost is to put the chassis on blocks to space it up the amount I want the oil pan hanging down (1" per prior owner, we'll see) mate the engine/trans back together and set it in place, hang the diff, and start making mounts.

Ok, blocks made, chassis is set to table centerline, and the chassis is clamped down on the blocks. Also stuck the front suspension back on, just for grins at this point since it's not on the list of things to mess with just yet. I really don't like the look of the lower arms (Sorry Jack), but I haven't really decided what to do about it. I've thought about just remaking the lowers in tube, or converting what's there into ersatz aero tube. We'll see.

Now to clean a bunch of hardware and the differential, mate the engine/transmission, and set that and the differential in place.

3D print an airfoil shape to cover them?

I was thinking along those lines, or welding sheet metal onto them. The latter approach is about as much work as just fabbing up tubular ones. The 3D printing... more CAD work but less physical work. Would have to be in sections though as my printer doesn't have the build volume to do it in one piece, at least I don't think so. Some measuring is in order.

I don't know why you'd bother right now with so much higher priority work to do. The arms are done except the coilover mount. Easy to get to later on. No need to cut those up as it would make more sense to start from scratch.

It's not high on my priority list, just thinking about how I'll handle it when the time comes. A little forethought goes a long way.

Ya, me too... apparently they all got lost in the rebuild of the site. I don't really have any way to know what got posted when, so it appears unless some other solution is found there will be pics from here on out.

EDIT: Dave got the pics back, yay! Go Dave!

You haven't missed much Taylor, I just got the car onto the indoor build table a few weeks ago (and the mid-engine Beetle onto the outdoor one I built since we last talked). So far, it's on the table and strapped down, engine/trans/diff back in, front suspension back on, center tunnel laid out and first two tubes cut for that. I also did a thorough clean of the engine and trans and have been given a 2001 engine and trans (both of which may have issues to solve). The 94 stuff will go in since I have everything but it's possible I'll build up the '01 engine with ITB's/cams/etc in the future. Oh, and I ordered new wheels, Konig Rewind in 15x7. Lightweight, decent quality, and not too expensive. I'd thought about putting my 15x9 6UL's off my old track Miata on it, but decided it required too much mucking about in the rear chassis (or big spacers) to get them to fit. Plus they were wider than the fenders. Since this is just a street car, it'll get some decent 195/50 or 205/50 tires rather than the 225's. Sold my 6UL's for enough to buy these outright plus money left over.

Pics as usual...

Overall shot...

Oh, and bracket making will be easier soon... bought a CNC plasma table yesterday. 8 week lead time though so no cutting right away.

LOVE those wheels. Planning similar for mine, but in a 5 lug hub.
Need to measure/determine the bolt pattern to be sure.

Looks like the exhaust may be a little snug with bottom hung pedals. Are you planning on a different header or staying OEM?

Love the wheels!

I agree, header is too close to the master cylinders so I get to try my hand at header building. I did order a CNC plasma table this week, so cutting out the flange won't be too tough at least. I like the look of the 4 into 1 through the side better anyway, but I figured I had to put the stock one up just to check.

If it were a book sized chassis, I'd just order a header from GBS or someone... but being it's a 442, I don't know of an off the shelf one that would fit.

Nice, it looks great all clean! Yeah I was planning for 205/50 also.
